Going out in a limb... could the dial have been requested by NAAFI? Or more plausible this might have been an institutional watch that got serviced by the institution and the dial got swapped then?

The watchmaker (a well regarded watchmaker at Orlando Watch Co) was convinced the dial was original, he said he saw no significant tool marks suggesting any major work). I'm still looking to make it 'correct' but thought it was an interesting note.
I know him, though a very competent watchmaker, he does not know Omegas like he thinks he does. Especially dials and complicated history subjects like Speedmasters.

I have a beautiful, actually 2 that are appropriate for that watch if you want to trade. I'll post some photos tomorrow as I am OOT working today, making some money for some more speedmasters.

The case and the bezel are pretty nice, it deserves a correct dial. I much prefer not having to swab dials and hands, but it seems reasonable in this case.

I'd let it be. The dial on it is worth more than the correct Professional dial and it gives the piece a bit of unique character.
