Need help finding a decent 'daily driver' cal601

Hi Folks. I'm new to the forum. I've never purchased an Omega. I'm looking for a manual winding model. Saw these 2 watches on ebay. Both appear to be refinished. I don't really care about potential for appreciation of value. I just need a 'daily driver' that will look nice/keep good time and maybe get an occasional compliment. Any thoughts on either of these watches, including suggested cost, would be most appreciated.

From those tiny photos, I can only say that the watches are probably legit. A refinished dial would be a total dealbreaker for me, and both of those watches horrify me.

It’s really for you to tell us the asking price rather than for us to suggest a price, particularly since the dials are unpleasantly repainted and that diminishes the value.

The second point for you to consider is that even though people who don’t know watches might tell you that they look nice - you’d know, you’d probably stop wearing it and, after buying an unredialed model, would have wasted your money.

You can probably find a decent Geneve (and possibly a Seamaster) for under £500.

Also look at OF Private Watch Sales as well as eBay.

Thanks Dan and Spruce for the complete spanking! (lol). Seriously, I appreciate the knowledge you both laid on me. My other watches are legit vintage Baume Mercier and Concord. Both are a bit formal, so I've been looking for something more casual. I guess I'll stick to actual vintage manual winding. While I have your attention, any thoughts on 286 versus 601 mechanisms?....or any others that are particularly recommended?

If you don’t want a date, I’m a big fan of the 552 automatic.

Others will correct me but I imagine that 601s are more recent, have more spares available and are easier to service.

thanks. I prefer no date. But I also prefer manual winding.

Plenty of 601 Omegas about. You should be able to find one fairly quickly. I’d recommend a 135.011 Seamaster 600.

While I loved the 30 mm movements (both Omega and Longines 30L). Parts are getting harder to find for the old Omega 30 mm movements.

If one parts supplier is out. Pretty much all will be out which men’s the secondary market

Had some 6 series movements and nice quality

Cal 601 is a good movement and the 30mm calibers are great time-tested movements - I don't think you can go wrong either way. There are tons of dial options with the cal 601, especially if you like the 135.011 case/lugs, including technical dials, Seamaster companion dials, etc.

Personally, I generally prefer watches with the 30mm movements. It's not the movement per se, just that many of the references have a more classic vintage look to my eyes. Another nice thing about the 30mm movements, is that you can find them pretty easily in larger cases. There's nothing wrong with 34-35mm, but 36mm is really a sweet spot for me. And of course there are the true jumbo references that are 37-38mm.

...any thoughts on this? refinished? cool?...not so much?

As @Davidt said. This, the initial two, and pretty much all colourful dials (from these references with 5xx and 6xx movements) are complete fakes. I once serviced one of those with a vibrant blue dial - it was literally cheap spray-paint.

You'll probably have to live with silver, champagne, or black dials (already rare and often fake).

These are two very good movements. If you want a more modern, discreet movement with a higher frequency, go for the 601. If you want a movement with more character and presence, then without hesitation, choose the 286, which is a larger movement derived from the 30T2, a design from the 1940s. Personally, I would choose the 286 without hesitation, if only for the pleasure of winding the legendary 30mm movement .

I personally like and recommend the 135.041 with a cal 601.

Here is my similar (has date) 136.041 manual wind. I don't wear it too too often but it does serve well as a daily vintage wearer and I like the rivet bracelet.

...looks very nice. Now that I've concentrated on looking at 'unrestored' watches, it's interesting how many of them are in very sad condition....especially in the actual movement compartment.

...speaking of which, some listing don't even have photos with the watch back removed to show the movement....no way I'd buy one of those.

The ones you've shown here are very obviously restored dials, with colors that were never available. Some redials are harder to tell, made to look original. As you learn more and refine what you're looking for the folks on this forum and its threads can help a lot.
