Nato Style Straps...

Agree the leather keepers are neater, but isn’t the leather thicker than the nato material, hence the watch will sit higher? Perhaps that’s the compromise?

Depends on the leather used, as well as whether it’s lined or not. This one is unlined and fairly thin leather, and as you can see the Autavia is sitting fairly flush against my wrist. (Good case design and curved springbars definitely make a big difference in wearability too)

My Omega NATO has no metal keepers 😗

This one isn’t Omega but doesn’t have metal keepers either 😉

that's a nice design. I appreciate that not many share my aversion to the nato style straps but as I pointed out it's the metal loops or "keepers" that freak me out as I have indeed seen them banging into lugs. obviously there are some who point out that if the straps are installed correctly it's not a problem but that would imply I need talent. So...I prefer NO metal near my vintage or collectible watches. no cuff links, no rivets on my pockets, no jewelry, and no nato straps. however these versions with non-metal loops are appealing. 😀

Only my eyes were.

*I'm a fan of NATO straps but some watches just don't belong on them in my opinion. Maybe the Aquanaut, but the others not so much

It's just a photo I post out every time someone goes on an irrational anti-NATO rant...

Not sure where it came from actually...posted somewhere and I thought it would get the anti-NATO guys all riled up.

jeez Al take it easy will ya? I got so riled up I marched into the kitchen and threw out everything I could find made in Canada. Do you know how long it takes to pour cold maple syrup down the drain? 😁

Anything to increase maple syrup sales. You fell right into the trap...

I've never had a problem with any of the aforementioned metal bits, but I do prefer the look of leather or fabric keepers rather than metal hardware. Just looks cooler IMO, no comment on functionality or danger to cases.

May I ask where you got the beige and navy blue ones on the left of your first picture?
Interesting textures, nice flat hardware too, never seen straps such as those.
Hi @Syrte, the straps all come from https://www.cheapestnatostraps.com/pages/about-us
I have found them cheap enough to experiment with colours and textures. Quality is ok, sometimes delivery to Australia is slow ( like 3 weeks). This is not CNS's fault more likely Oz customs.
I have found them hard to trim length neatly so no longer bother.
Happy New Year, Marco

I like soft straps for the colour options and light weight but I don't like all the steel hardware.....so I cut off the extra bits and ended up with this which suits me just fine.

Some watches just look right on a nato.
I have never seen a strap bar touching a lug. So many different vibes can be finessed with colours.

Very impressive collection!

whenever I see a nice watch, and especially a nice Vintage watch on a nato style strap I cringe. it's those metal loops that have the potential of slapping against the lugs. some pics even show them in fact contacting each other.
my reaction to these images is like hearing fingers against a chalk board. some of these watches pictured are obviously worn by owners that should know their collectible watch lugs are getting whacked and marked up by the pointless style strap.
the other thing that gets me is wrist shots of valuable watches with some sort of metallic wrist jewelry slapping against it. there should be a law 😁
I totally agree with you, I think the NATO strap is the stupidest looking strap, unless of course you're a NAVY Seal, Special Ops Commando, active military personnel or Astronaut using it in the field or maybe just a "wanna be" NAVY Seal, Special Ops Commando, active military personnel or Astronaut. Otherwise, it's the most butt ugly thing that you could do to a watch. Hey, that's just me (and you) though. lol
Edited 1/28/20: I've changed my mind on these after looking at them on y'alls different watches, I'm actually growing kinda fond of them now. I was wrong and I'm not too ashamed to admit it.

My first foray into nato straps:

I believe that is a one piece Perlon strap, not a NATO. The latter have a specific design with a second flap and extra loops.

I like Perlon straps BTW.

Is that a nylon strap or fabric? Because I've had a bunch of NATOs over the years (all nylon) and even the ones I used exclusively for activity / exercise, have no discernible smell to them

The good thing about NATO straps is that if they are fabric, you can simply throw them in the washing machine when needed. I wear a watch playing tennis at least 6 hours a week on a NATO, and it gets washed and rotated with a few others regularly.

Tip for a strap that smells - place it in a plastic bag, and throw in the freezer for a week. Even smelly leather straps have come back smelling clean doing this in my experience.

Why am I not surprised you are asking that...
