I remember first seeing this when I was a kid
it was simultaneously horrifying and arousing
Set in London, let me know if you need any more clues

So here's some more clues on this one;
it's set in London, the female lead is French, and the film director's wife who looked very similar to our female protagonist, was actually murdered in real life not that long after this was made. Also, the sister of the actress, who was also an actress was tragically killed very shortly after this film was made.

Oh and she was also married to David Bailey😉

That all sounds like one legendary, sleazebaggy director who’s no longer welcome in the US

"Once upon a time, In Hollywood?" If only he had a flamethrower at the time.

Here's a good one:

I don't know who you are. I don't know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don't have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills, skills I have acquired over a very long career, skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you. I will not pursue you.
But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you😉

👎 so maybe it's Taken II (The Miserable Ones) costume drama? Where he sings the following in operetta style:

all kidding aside, that's gotta be something like Michael Collins or Rob Roy, right? How many period pieces has the man actually done?!

Yes! This is the NON musical version, based on Victor Hugo's incredible book. I much prefer it to any of the musical versions.

Okay so the director was correctly identified, maybe it's a bit esoteric but it's a really great film, set contemporaneously 1964/5 in London with the immensely talented and stunningly beautiful Catherine Deneuve as the main protagonist, Repulsion is a film that haunted me when I was a child and I first saw it on TV (BBC no adverts) late at night on my own in a dimly lit house.

In relative isolation, via a series of hallucinations, she descends into madness and androphobia.

This is too hard, here is a easy one.

I think this is by far Javier Bardem's best English-language film!
He's incredibly subtle and profoundly sinister.

Agreed.

Here's a bit of trivia: that's his real hair in the movie. It looks like a bad wig, but he confirmed during an interview that he wore that haircut every day for several months.
