Yeah for sure, two other great examples Amadeus and Barry Lyndon that are an exception to the usual rule..
Theatre can be wonderful but can be bloody expensive, although most theaters here now have reduced-price nights, and budget-friendly seats which is vitally important. It can also be a massive disappointment (though I've not had too many of those) so I tend to be fairly selective unless I get comps, which lessens the blow a bit if it turns out to be crap😁
Okay so the film is incredibly well-known so it's actually really difficult to select stills that won't just give it away immediately😉
but here are two more:
Another still from the same scene as previous, but there are more clues:
+ one more from the same film:
Oh no way! That's Gary Oldham in Meantime!
Annie Hall
Coen brothers, Blood Simple??
Brilliant! You got it right the first time! I think it's Mike Lee's finest, with a cast to die for! as you mentioned Gary Oldman, Tim Roth, Alfred Molina, Phil Daniels.. It's a brilliant piece of work and an incredible time capsule of that moment in time and place.
Naked, brilliant performance by David Thwelis!
I think my very first Mike Lee experience was seeing Abigail's Party when I was a very young boy, the second film I saw of his was also Meantime, followed by Secrets and Lies then Naked..
I thought of looking up a still from what I think is that film to post here. If it is the film I am thinking of it has half the Harry Potter cast. My dad still does not think that is Jane Horroks. Always been a Broadbent fan since Blackadder.
Topsy Turvey is also an incredible treat. Or am I mixing Mike Lee with Mike Leigh? Often uses the same actors in really different rolls.
I think I just tripped over the soup ladle.
Topsy Turvy is a hidden gem in my book (provided one can stomach costumes and singing). I’ve always seen Mike’s name spelled as Leigh, but what do I know? 😜
