My wife hearing how much people spend on their hobbies

Is yours constant, or does it come and go?
Mine is constant, but faint high pitched and feels like towrd the back of my head.
But sometimes it kicks off as if a switch gets flicked on in my right ear with a deeper rising ringing.
I ignore it for as long as I can and it seems to die off but I don't know exactly when it does that as I've got used to just putting up with it.

Twenty years of standing ten feet away from jet intakes and lifting my right ear protector to hear what somebody was trying to say may have helped.

It just occurred to me that I spend a LOT more on jewellery for my missus than I spend on watches for my collection! By far the majority of my collection are “rescues”, and they can be had very cheap, or even free! So sweat equity costs nothing but the time required to resuscitate a collectible. The last watch that I added to my collection (about 18 months ago) is pictured. An 1877 model Waltham 13-jewel hunter cased pocket watch that needed much work when I paid $50.00 for it! Today, it is a joy to own.

My hearing is impaired and there also is that characteristic high pitched background hiss, due to too much indulgence in audio delights at excessive volume combined with spending more than $255 per month in ammunition expense in order to indulge a shooting sports hobby.

Too many guns going off, too much buggerising about with explosives, too many race cars, too much time in ship engine rooms, manufacturing plants, steel and timber mills and too much use of power tools like angle grinders has left me with a bloody loud constant ringing that seems to me in the upper middle of my head the volume can vary a bit but it never goes away.
If I'm around dope smokers the 2nd hand smoke seems to make it worse!
As I write this it's pretty loud,so I may not be able to get to sleep until I'm just too tired to stay awake

Ahem ( Chronic cough starts ...) , my Audio cables cost more than your suggestion ... Things change considerably with optimizing steps for listening to Vinyls ... Forget Digital sources.
Ahem, cables do not help if they are adequate for the distance needed. One of the biggest scams in audio. (i.e., 'hi-end' cables are the Hublots of audio) 😁

Been there, done that (within reason). I have interconnect and speaker cables I built from Canare and paired with a Purifi amp and that system does everything my 'he-man' system can do and more. I think being an engineer helped me finally overcome the decades of brainwashing that started in my early teens. There are several TTs around here, plus a couple disk players and some streaming options.

The only items truly worth the hi-fi $ spent are the Bryston (which went ~25 years before needing a repair) and the Revel speakers.

I've been leaving the dark side in search of neutrality and transparency. Listener preferences can then be dialed in with sound processing, if I want 'warm', 'liquid', etc that is not actually in the recording. The last step in my main system is ditching the handbuilt hybrid preamp system (the Bryston is fine). The other two systems are essentially there, as is my 'desktop' HP system.

Sleep well when it comes.
Sometimes it seems almost worth keeping the ads. Does this help at all?😉

$255 per year?! The average adult is a liar, and/or extremely boring.

I noticed that my hobby expenses track very well my income over the years.

Example:
- student: freshwater fish: gouramis, scalares
- first real job after graduating: saltwater fish: damselfish, wrasses, gobies
- after a few salary increases: full blown reef: shrimp, clams, clownfish + anemones, fancy corals, etc.

It's been ten years since I cured of that disease, replaced by another (sigh).

Mine is constant, but faint high pitched and feels like toward the back of my head.

Major thread drift alert (though the title does say "hearing" 😉)
I have loss of hearing since birth. A very knowledgeable audiologist (Ph.D.) says it is most likely a genetic issue (apparently 1 out 400 people have the predisposition).
Tinnitus caused by hearing loss occurs because our brain's sound processing function increases the gain to compensate for the hearing loss. The sounds of tinnitus are the nervous system's background noise that are amplified.
In my case, I have a multitude of types of noises: high pitch tones, white noise, drones, etc. They vary in perceived loudness. They sometimes wake me at night. It can be LOUD at times.
In some people the tinnitus causes anxiety (though not me, fortunately), some so severe it leads to suicide. 😲

I used to collect stamps (pre and early 20th century; they're quite beautiful and intricate little pieces of art), which are obviously inherently low cost but due to their collectable nature can be quite costly / valuable.
One could spend considerably less than $255/yr on stamps, but I imagine stamp collecting is no longer a popular hobby.

Get a Seamaster, one time investment. Become a member in OF, free. Learn a lot, see beautiful watches and talk to nice people from all over the world, still free. See pictures of cats and horned owls, free. And you dont waste your whole day on here, because we arent overly active, free to do other things.

A hobby dont need to be expensive.

Tough to deal with. Don’t they have that surgical implant to restore hearing? I don’t know if it works for everyone I talked to someone who had it but briefly. I believe at the time they could not hear music from a stereo but could hear live music if I’m not mistaken.
I’m fortunate never had any hearing problems except after a Who reunion show left my ears buzzing for 3 days.

😀 Unfortunately not. I am that dude that still think he is 18 or 48 for that matter, he get hints by his mates that it might be a good idea to go home. " What??? Home??? Why???" I have lost a lot of Sundays.
