Orchi isn’t the only controversial figure. Weren’t James Dowling and Bob Maron publically called into question as well? The collecting community still gained valuable knowledge from these figures despite their controversy. Buyer beware still applies. In light of this, it seems prudent to have Geneva evaluate this rare watch’s authenticity.

Send the watch to Geneva, for absolute definitive authentication

Rolex will either return the watch, with a glowing official endorsement

Or …you will never see it again.

You can probably do that with a more modern watch, with something like that i doubt.
Also, it is Sothebys responsability to autenticate the watch through Rolex, not the buyer.

I am not in a rush but eventually, I will have the watch brought to Geneva for proper authentication.

I think it would help loads if Orchi would also point out good examples of vintage Rolex watches instead of just bashing supposedly fake examples. At the rate he is going, it really makes it seem like vintage Rolex is a minefield.

It is a minefield.

I’m a complete noob when it comes to old Rolex’es, so how many versions does exist of the bakelite bezel?

Just looking at the comparison posted above where the split point is different from OP’s watch.
Yeah, it doesn't look "similar" to me. Or is that Dealer's talk?

Agreed. It sort of reminds me of that worker in the office who will bash every single solution/alternative but doesn't give any input. It's always easy to bash and criticise.

Orchi is certainly knowledgeable about vintage Rolex. @erpin9 you may want to take up your dealer’s offer to have the watch evaluated in Geneva.
@erpin9 It isn't a small amount of money here; If your dealer has offered to refund the money if it's not genuine, that's great. It can be quite unsettling to know that you have spent a premium and to have something that isn't what you thought it is.

just my 2 cents of course.

It is, and after a bit of dabbling, I felt I was the blind man in one finding my way around with a cane . Made a purchase that turned out to be a franken, which made me realised that it was just not worth the trouble.

After collecting vintage Rolex for more than 15 years and following the various relevant websites, I don't recall anyone ever discussing meaningful input or feedback when asked to inspect vintage pieces, and my attempts for something similar were rebuffed with an early Daytona. Are others aware of different experiences?

These issues are by there nature are difficult to prove or disprove. So the refund "offer" may be illusory.

If you look ar Orchi's IG it is scary . If half of what he says is true collecting vintage Rolex is a $'s dangerous hobby.
Gear coming out of Vietnam is very good so I am told.
Compared to antiques and the art world watches are easy to enhance for unscrupulous dealers , who themsleves may be fooled.
Provenance is everything with vintage Rolex. A sad watch from the first owner is a better buy than an excellent one from the watch factory in the sky.
Hopefully @erpin is covered if he is concerned and all ends well. Best of luck my friend.

Orchi is a strange man for sure but the fact is even if we like or dislike , he shows concerns and make people think... and in the past he revealed many big concern with lots of proof and very details explanation.
Now maybe I am a real noob but when an expert say ‘ your bezel has the same font than the one in the goldenberg book ‘ it sounds like a strange answer ... yes the fonts are close but the rest of the bezel looks totally different ... so ...

Right. Rolex's information about those old watches is nearly inexistent.

Rolex is mum about their past. They’re in the business of selling new watches. The early sports models are a snake pit and the info available was obtained by trial and error... and speculation. What is correct or acceptable has been determined by “experts”.
