I don't understand. It's like you're saying you can't learn new information per se.. you're telling me you can't go read and understand the content on speedmaster101 or MWO? (They are written in English btw...) speedmaster101 and MWO can get you started in a really good place.
Perhaps, but will speedmaster 101 or MWO teach me to identify a chemically-faded bezel? I haven't spent much time there, so I honestly don't know.
Adam names it FOIS modded into Ed White. So there is no confusion at all about what you get from him.
Agreed, and I agree with your other points as well. The problem that I have is that Adam isn't (or won't be, for long) the only one modding FOIS to a high-degree of accuracy/quality and not everyone shares his scruples. I know, I know, buy the seller.
Except for the fact that this one does not have a step dial.
Which is what, one of a hundred things on the checklist, right? I didn't know that I should have known that. This my point. I don't know what I don't know, and knowing that takes ME out of the market. I'm sorry if I'm not as excited as all of you about this, but I am not judging you for your enthusiasm. I'd appreciate the same in return for knowing my limitations, possibly only at this time, as a buyer.

Yeah man the learning never ends and I enjoy the learning process anyway.

Switched out the strap with the JR one. First time I ever did this and didn't scratch the lugs like my OB did on the one side they removed (just to try the bracelet on one end).

Edit: also to add the watch was never sold to me as if the swapped parts are new from Omega. They could be used for all I know or care for that matter. I was trying to buy used parts here on the forum to make my own before finding this and it may explain why the dial looks the way it does. Used parts would make the patina effect better anyway.

@jsducote - would you, before seeing this thread, ever had walked into a +$10K purchase of anything without doing research first?

The above modification has little to no chance of ever being passed on as an EW for a number of reasons... Where the pitfalls lie is when period or near-period correct parts get put together to create frankenwatches that at a cursory check seems ok, but vital parts are incorrect. That would decimate any value to the level of the parts themselves.

I don't think that this watch puts you out of the market; if you aren't willing to do a certain amount of research, you were never in it to begin with.

Yes - this bezel is clearly a modern one that has been faded. So far these bezels have not naturally faded (at least not on any example I have seen)

Considering the bezel is a large contributing factor to the value of a vintage Speedmaster, you should probably start there if you’re concerned about not being able to distinguish between vintage and modern

I think this build looks amazing. Makes the FOIS a valid option for having something that resembles a straight lug speedy with a vintage look and feel to it.

Adding my congrats on a great looking mod. I hope more information comes out at some point as to exactly how the swap from sapphire to hesalite is done, and how to ensure it retains the normal level of water resistance expected in a standard Speedy.

I own 4 Speedy's of which only 1 has the original dial, hands, movement and case (ST2 Ultraman). All others are original Omega parts with some modification (dial/hand swap, etc). The FOIS case with baton hands, relumed fauxtina markers and hesalite crystal is a very appealing combo! 😎

Well done! 👍 The best part is that you can wear it without concern for devaluing it as you would with a true EW. ::psy::

Nice work. How about a see through case back to appreciate the movement?

I normally would say "KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!", but I must say I love what was done to this watch and would choose it 100 times out of 100 over the FOIS I tried in the store a couple of weeks ago.

Excellent piece, thank you for sharing!

congrats on the lovely piece. Screw what the purist say, buy and wear what you love. Amazing FOIS. I would have loved to see a stepped dial on it.

Some of the subdial white margin look like unpainted/uncoated portion left by Omega and others are not real and due to lighting as I look at it putting a light to it. It's not visible looking directly at the dial and needs a steep angle to notice.

As mentioned above only 1 of those on the hesalite is real and rest was removable dust. Upon closer inspection the persistent one at 730 I think may be a small nick and not dust as it's actually a circle with a clear center (think of it as of hitting a sharp point). I can't tell for sure but it seems to be on the inside as I can't feel it. I've already scratched the hesalite minimally today with light use. If it was sapphire I'd like it fixed but I consider it a wear and tear item being hesalite and it will be replaced in 5 years.

The subdial part doesn't bother me as the rest of the watch has a faux patina on it. Hell maybe even those were added for effect for all I know. If it wasn't a patina watch I may be inclined to do something about it but I'm not. Still enjoy looking at it. 😀

Awesome mods there OP. I've only gone so far as replacing the hands only because I didn't like the sword hands.

Very nice! Any other mods planned for it? Strap or a bracelet? I definitely recommend a flat link as it's very comfortable as well as good looking.

Since I made the original post, I've added a Forstner flat link bracelet (brushed + polished style) along with an Omega clasp and then switched out the clasp cover for a more vintage looking Omega one. I bought yet another clasp cover this week and it should arrive tomorrow...hopefully 3rd Omega clasp cover is the charm and then done with mods. 😀 I put all those photos in the FOIS on a bracelet thread.
