My father's watch - Cal 284

Hi all,

New to the forum. This was my father's watch. I would like to know more about it. There are many similar Cal 284's on Chrono24 (my main point of reference), but none that look identical. Is the face missing markings? What would the original band have looked like? What was the watch called? Based on the serial # on the movement, I think it was from 1956-1957. Is this correct? Any information would be much appreciated.

I believe it may have had a seconds hand. If so, does anyone know what part number it might be? Where can I find one? What would the dimensions have been? How much should I pay for it? On ofrei.com, I am only finding a blue 14.5mm seconds hand that seems to match the movement, but not the watch. Further, the hole size is vague (Second-Hand hole size listed as range 0.23 mm - 0.25 mm wide).

I know I could probably send it back to Omega, but I am not enthusiastic about having it out of my possession for several months. Also, I feel like if I send it back to Omega for a service, I am risking that they will not keep it original in the way that I would want.

This piece is incredibly sentimental to me. Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello and welcome to OF. What we need to see in order to help you is a clear photo of the inside of the case back. The case reference number should be shown there.

Welcome! A clearer, focused photo of the dial would be great to evaluate the originality. Caseback also. It should have a seconds hand.

Your date of 1956-1957 is correct.

Unfortunately based on your photo the dial appears to have been refinished at some point. From a collectors view this hurts the value, but from a sentimental view it's part of your fathers history with the watch. Refinishing dials way back when was quite common.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to help me. I really do appreciate it.

I added some photos. Honestly, I'm not the best with a camera so I'm having a hard time not catching a glare.

Thanks for the info! I kinda suspected something was off given the lack of markings. I'm curious how you can tell it was refinished. What gives it away? I'm always looking to learn!

The quality and placement of the printing.

Here is a correct original of the same reference. Note that as with most Omegas from this period there were many different dials offered with a given reference, yours being 2902.
