It's thought that Omega could have released these earlier than 1971 but held them back until they received permission from NASA. They sought permission because this inscription on the caseback was the first Speedmaster that mentioned the Moon landing.
This watch is one of my favorites because it seems to freeze a jubilant time in history. The watches before had nothing inscribed on them about the Moon and the ones after were formalized. This one that says "First Watch on the Moon" seems to yell "Whoopie, we did it!"
