My Dads Inherited Vintage Naiad Medicus

Hi Reno, it was not my intention to diminish the value or beauty of your strap, donated to the OP.
The argument that all buckles were in brass in my opinion cannot be universal, not even in military watches, as for example the widely used Bonklip was in stainless steel. And I have several steel buckles from the 40s, as well as base metal plated nickel or chrome.

You show a military 2777 from 1953, but this was a Naiad medicus, usually purchased by medics and professionals, a different clientele.

Anyway - I have no problems , it's not my watch (unfortunately)
The widely used Bonklip was created after the war and after steel shortages. The reason why the vast majority of WWII watches in the US and British military were cheap alloys and base metal was because of steel being in short supply and retainef for weaponry.
The vast majority of Royal Air Force pilot watches known as 6B/159, US Army watches, watches issued to the Marines and A11 US Pilot watches are base metal and cheap alloys for that very reason. That was @Revo’s point.

Actually you are wrong. The Bonklip was created in 1931 by DR Howitt (see patent) and was an evolution of the Krementz straps of the 1920s.

It was famously used in the Navigation watches of 48 (both MkXI JLC and IWC were steel anyway) .

But we are not talking military watches. The Naiad medicus is a steel, expensive watch for medics.

That's why I was saying that it probably had a steel buckle.

I stand corrected for the date the Bonklip was created, but the reason I thought it was post-war was exactly because of its well known use on the JLC and IWC Mark XI watches- 1948 is post war indeed.

Hi Revo,

It's been a while & I still love your Bravingtons strap you gave me for my Niad Medicus, I still can't believe the controversy it caused with some of our fellow enthusiasts

Can't fault it myself & love the pig skin look & the orange stitching contrasting against the buttery coloured solid brass buckle & now I'm thinking of parting way's with it, both the Medicus & strap but don't know how to go about selling it, never sold anything in my life, especially online & wouldn't know where to start!...

I’m guessing that, given what you’ve said about the watch before, you have your reasons for being willing to sell it now. The rules for this forum require you to have 200 posts before you can use this venue for sales, and even the appearance of trying to circumvent this is rightly frowned upon, if not worse. However, you’ve got a good start on the posting threshold, so if you step up your participation here you will eventually be able to sell it to a dedicated collector/enthusiast and keep it somewhat in the family. If you’re more pressed for time, eBay and the like are an option, but will probably lead to a less happy outcome. Maybe members in Britain can point you to an auction house you can work with. I would not envy an inexperienced seller venturing into the world of watch trading.

I’m not an expert, but as lovely and special as the watch is, there is likely to be a disappointingly large gap between its heirloom value and what a collector would pay in its condition.

Thankyou once again T.O. I will do the obvious thing which I should have done in the first place with my letter & I'll put it back on the Morra, much appreciated 😀 👍

To be clear, it’s not necessary to meet the 200-post threshold on this particular thread.
