You can see with the 1920 census data that they really are poor quality since everything is "About XXXX"

So, we still have the original problem, without something more tangible, it's pretty hard to isolate Edward M Corey from other Edward M Coreys. The watch doesn't have a rank, military id, date, city/country, organization, or anything else.

But the census reports from the government, at first glance, seem to have caught almost everything. And even if they didn’t, I’d still say it’s reasonable to assume the percentages are going to be scalable, unless it’s for extremely unusual names where missing a few tens or hundreds would make a significant difference. Anyway I’ll stick to about 60, and you can stick to about 600,000.

Yes but I’m only trying to discuss how we arrive at the correct estimate for how many Edward M Corey’s were in the US in the 1940s. Nothing more, nothing less.

So there is a 1 chance in 60 that the watch belongs to the military person?

Yes if there was no other info… but doesn’t the OP have a first hand account ?

You still have a watch that was purchased in the United States while the person is still at war in Europe.

Isn’t that the invoice date for the US distributor though ? There’s no connection to the final sale date.

True, there is still a few months unexplained. Maybe the watch sat in a store for a long long time.

I don’t think >6 months is unrealistic. I’m not even sure what the connection is between the invoice date and the physical delivery date to the distributor.

I am okay if the watch belongs to Sgt. Corey, I am just curious how the connection was made. It is based on a story that Ed gave a gift from his parents to a watchmaker. My only contention is that Ed M Corey is a popular name making it really hard to find that person by name alone.

Just pick the one who adds the most value 😉
