I have a watch for sale, both here and on eBay, and thanks to the OF - and this post specifically, it was easy to spot a scam in action and avoid any further complication.
It was a rather unimaginative version of the scam Darren detailed in this thread.
My watch was listed for sale as a 'Buy it Now' on eBay and the would-be-buyer submitted an offer for the same amount as the buy it now price. Strange, right? The offer also included a messaged request to text them at a St. Louis area code number to discuss shipping and condition, so I was, in a sense “socially engineered" to respond to them via text.
We had a brief text exchange, nothing abnormal really, and despite my suspicions, I accepted their offer. After sending them the PayPal invoice via eBay, I received a text message asking me to confirm my PayPal email address. I responded that it was in the invoice, and that they need to remit payment via the invoice prior to me shipping the watch. At this point I pretty much knew what was up, and when they asked again stating it was just for confirmation, I relented and sent them my PP email address...and in short order received the following emails from “
eBay” and “
PayPal” requiring me to provide confirmed shipping prior to releasing the funds...sound a bit familiar at this point...?
First was the email from the "Moustache Guy" at PayPal assuring me that "
This condition is only used for all transactions on eBay"...
And then came the follow up (*note same spoofed email address), that went directly to my Spam filter (thanks, Google), with a new contact name, new delivery method (Fedex Overnight) and new delivery address.
At this point, having already marked my sales post here OHPF (needless to say, it is still available and that will be reflected here tomorrow) and not having the patience that Darren showed with his scammer, I sent the following note via text message:
There was a bit more via email, including one from a new "buyer" profile (literally new; made today, March 12, 2020) stating that his father was in a car accident and that he needed it shipped to yet another "friend" at third (!) address, but by this time the sale had been cancelled on eBay, all communication, phone numbers and email, had been shared with the eBay Support team.
In the end an inconvenience to me, but nothing worse. I'm certain I would have sussed out this scam on my own, but there was no need as it was obvious from the get-go what was going on, and for that my sincerest gratitude.
Thank you Omega Forum for being an awesome place with awesome members.
