If your looking for a one bedroom flat £700 a month is possible in the slightly less desirable areas. I live in the North part of the city and pay £1200 for a two bed in a large Victorian semi in a nice part of town. In London £1300 gets you a cramped two bed flat in Leytonstone ( where we were before). If home ownership were a priority I would be tempted to hop across the Severn to Newport. Houses are far more affordable there and now the Severn Toll has gone its reasonably commutable by car. Certainly Wales in general has very affordable housing. My grandfathers 3 bed semi in need of modernisation sold for £79k earlier this year. Not great for job opportunities though.

I have family links in Wales / have spent time there in a few places.... Had some nights out in Newport way back in the day..... Used to be a bit crazy with a lot of big fights... I hid in a goth club :0). I am sure it has improved with age.
