For reference... The Journe: Sounds like a guy hitting a nail into cement. Horrid. Seriously. This has to be one of the least pleasant repeaters on Earth. A Patek: Wonderfully musical. The gold standard for what good sounds like. Both recorded by WatchBox with the same mic. Obviously the didn't level things well, but we aren't talking volume here, just quality of sound. My point: Journe repeaters are literally one of, if not THE WORST sound repeaters ever made. Now, I know what you are thinking. "The Patek is substantially more then the Journe. Of course it sounds better!" Fine. The Journe has an RRP of $185,000 USD. Let's compare it to the IWC at a bargain basement price $86,000 (in gold, steel is even less): You can also compare the far less expensive JLC's that also sound lovely above posted by Archer...
I agree that Patek is the gold standard for MRs. I dont have a video but i think Vacheron also sounds well.
If anyone is in the market for a minute repeater there is a sale at Christie's on July 13 when 13 vintage and contemporary Patek Philippe minute repeaters come on the market.....expected value in the range of US$11,000,000. Exquisite stuff. Now is your chance. https://www.christies.com/features/...tory_4_1&cid=DM396323&bid=224897903#FID-10447
That Patek Philippe Ref 2524/1 from 1955 is drop dead gorgeous. Challenged only by this style Vacheron Constantin from the same era. The very few minute repeaters produced in this time period were the apex of design, imo. Simple, but with exquisite mechanisms.
Vacheron is beautifully designed and (look at those lugs) massively underrated. The one brand of the holy trinity that has not achieved a similar market success
Wearing this one today. Told my eldest daughter how it works and why one was built to begin with. she loved telling time just by the sound.
I once had a red gold one in my hands, it was at the IWC Collectors meeting in Sept 2002, Schaffhausen. I totally loved it , and at that time was still affordable. What kept me from buying it, was that all the interesting bits, i.e. the hammers and the repeater module designed by Claret, were actually positioned between the movement and the dial, rather than visible from the back. And am afraid that what is mesmerizing s not only the sound, but also the rhythm of movement of the hammers.
though the 6301P is also a PS and an MR. Is there a comparable GS only and MR only, same case material?
There might well be but all of Patek’s Grand Complications are POA. This is the model I was referring to in my last post and it’s a Perpetual Calendar not Annual like I said
interesting, where are the hammers located? Love the simplicity of the dial and case. Are you able to upload a vid? Absolutely love minute repeaters
