Mid 82-84 Speedmaster, legit?

Hello, I am considering buying this Speedmaster and wanted to know if it looks correct or if anything looks concerning...I know the bracelet is not correct, but not much else. SN is 4525xxxx, which I believe is an 82-83. I was looking for an 85(birthyear), but this is close enough I guess... Also, what's a good price on this one?

Two concerns that jump out at you immediately... the case appears to have been polished and the bezel insert is an aftermarket as this reference did not have a DON ( dot over 90 ) insert. The case-back is correct, the dial and hands are correct. I have no clue what's going on with the lume as I'd expect to see some slight patina. I'd pass on the one you are questioning and find a better example. Prices for this reference probably range from high 3s to high 6s.

Here are two from your birth year on Chrono 24... you can research the price as it will vary depending on condition, box and papers, bracelet etc. Both examples have the correct bezel insert.

Indeed, there is something off about this particular watch. That said, thread with caution on Chrono24 as well; the first link reveals a Speedy that comes with a correct bezel insert and what is clearly a service dial. From personal experience; it is actually quite hard to find a nice early 80s Speedmaster at the moment. 馃榾

As @Marsimaxam indicated, there's no question the bezel insert is incorrect, but finding a replacement is possible. As the OP noted, the bracelet is obviously wrong, but again, a replacement 1171/1 is not hard to source. Case has been polished and isn't completely sharp, but it looks decent enough in my eyes. I'm not too concerned about the lume on the dial. The early-1980s Speedy Pros tended to come with mint green lume and this one looks consistent with that as I see a tinge of green in the photos (which look slightly overexposed to me). I have a 44mil serial Speedy Pro and the lume looks comparable to the OP example.

In terms of price and whether to buy, I think it comes down to whether you want a watch that you wear everyday or an immaculate specimen that you keep in a safe. This one looks fine to me as an everyday watch, once the correct bezel insert and bracelet replacements are sourced. If you want a perfect original specimen, then keep on looking.

Given the issues, I would put a lower price on this watch -- circa $3000 -- for it to be an attractive deal.

Are you sure? Have another closer look 馃榾
You don't need a closer look, they stand out a mile as being wrong.

Hands are not correct for the reference, and the case seems a bit polished...

It was late at night, but, damn, I missed it. You are absolutely right. The hands are later C3 whereas they should be C2.

Thanks Aludic for pointing out the service dial on the more expensive example on Chrono24... I wasn't looking that closely and didn't examine all the photos, but it stands out when you do look at the photo of the dial (Swiss Made) ... well at least the other one didn't have a service dial. Luckily, I didn't tell the OP to buy it... but to look at the correct bezel insert.

True but sourcing a decent bezel from this era might set you back $500-700 or even more (if you can even find one). Worth factoring in if you're interested in having the watch fully period correct.

Correct hands will be equally challenging.

From the seller, "Correct, the hands are from a ST 71 and the bezel is after market. It seems that the previous owner was after the vintage look". He is asking $3250, no box/no papers.

The hunt for my first Speedy continues... I'm likely going to go with a 99 Hesalite Sandwich or a new .005. Just waiting for a good deal to fall my way!

Thank you all for the help!
