Actually I wear my Speedmaster when I want to have a nice watch that doesn’t scream Rolex or rob me. I also have a vintage Seiko that I’ll wear when traveling. Otherwise I get insurance on the watches and hope for the best (but prepared for the worst).

Maybe he's referring to his car

Well I dare not mention my cars here judging by some of the above replies.

TBH I'm surprised (and somewhat disappointed) tyrantlizardrex; “5k in a beater...” right. troll post got so many likes.

Well where I live in a farming type environment, and also regular trips to the beach (as us Aussies do), any daily wear watch is pretty much a beater, and I have no issues wearing an seamaster (some 6.5k here) as a daily. Kinda what its made for...no? Having said that I wouldn't wear a solid gold submariner in the same environment.

Nice Timex for everyday, I work construction sometimes can't stand beating up a precious watch, 2000-3000 for special occasions, I use to work everyday with my Omega 2298.80 Titanium , took it off and put in in my jacket pocket, got home and realized it was not in my jacket anymore, I thought I probably left it in the car in the glove box, I was beat, went straight to bed, turns out next day I went in my car it was not there , looked everywhere for an entire 2 days straight, turned out there was a whole in my jacket pocket just big enough for the watch to slip out, had never noticed it, someone out there must have gotten a free 2298.80 at some point since it was winter at the time, maybe when the snow melted, I traced back my steps but never found it again.(15 years ago)
Shows you even after a while expensive objects tend be taken for granted. So now I just take them out on special occasions.

Always nice to be surprised!! I don’t dare mention my vehicle either cuz I hate when people can’t handle how much of a boss it makes me look.

Photo from last winter but it’s still pretty darn cool

Oh and I also got a bike.

I do sense somewhat of a negative vibe in some of the comments, I do apologise if I am out of place with my posts. Not trying at all to put anyone down in expressing various price points, I thought comfortable discussing it here as the forum has highend watch section discussions and I signed up because I'm getting the new gold speedy and I bet I'm not the only one here doing so.

Get used to the negativity from some of the old members.
There are some smart playing as..s among us.
But I guess you are used to negative people you are from the same continent. 😜

$15k for an everyday beater. $600 for an occasional-use dress-up watch, as it seems silly to me to spend $$$ on a watch you only wear a few times per year.

Wear what you feel comfortable with - but factor in additional risk based on where you are, and under what circumstances.

Ultimately, don't make yourself a target, by having something that's obviously worth stealing, if you're in a place where such a thing is a risk.

wise words 'Rex!

My watches are vintage, and I think more about condition than value when it comes to wearing them. I sometimes hesitate to wear a 50-year-old $1k watch that is in pristine condition, but I have no problem wearing a 50-year-old $10k watch with a well-worn case.

You're just experiencing some friendly digs @kelsey 😉

I don't really go in for beaters (I like the concept, but I struggle to buy a watch and then treat it with anything but respect), but have a Nomos Club Campus 38 Nacht (approx £1200 at full retail), which has become my go-anywhere watch.

Wow, I really like that
For me probably 20-30k USD, at which point I would insure. None of my watches are insured right now, but the insurance would help peace of mind.

I guess you would have to define what you mean by "beater" here, because I would not likely own or wear a $10 watch.

I define a beater as a watch I wear when I am doing some activity where there's risk of watch damage. It has to be something that can be fixed easily, so no rare watch or vintage with hard to find parts. I still however want to wear something that I like and enjoy wearing, so for me this is my "beater"...

Watchco SM300 that I wear when playing tennis, doing yard work, at outdoor concerts, and it went on vacation for 5 weeks to Australia with me at the start of this year. It did all the same things there that it does here - played tennis, went hiking, and it accompanied me to the Australian open for 4 days...

It also accompanied me on many wine tastings and a beer festival, where there was certainly a risk of me falling over. 😀

I've also worn my vintage 1971 Speedmaster playing tennis, but I stopped doing that when I realized how much replacing the tritium hands or dial would be. 😲

I recently wore a Nomos Tangente to play tennis and also to do some yard work - chopping with an axe, feeding an afternoon's worth of brush through a wood chipper, but that was more to prove a point that the watch isn't as fragile as some think it is.

To answer the OP's question, I'll know it when I get there, and I haven't gotten there yet.

Cheers, Al

The OP asked: "So what priced watch would you feel comfortable wearing?" which is a bit vague because it depends whether you price based on your purchase cost or the current market value. The way some prices have moved up in the last few years the difference can be significant and that creates the same dilemma for me that others mentioned in other threads -- I'm reluctant to wear some watches now the way I used to because of these price movements.

I just wear everything, even to the gym. If I'm not comfortable wearing, I wouldn't buy it in the first place. Definitely more conscious of my environment and careful about moving my left hand specifically, but hasn't been a problem. The only time I'm careful about what I wear is when I'm playing with my German Shepherd, that guy jumps on me as if he were still a little puppy!

I'm more concerned with the watch than the money. Money is an issue, but I don't often wear my old Carrera (see avatar) because there are only so many of them in that condition, and I'd hate to beat up my dad's old watch. I don't know what it's worth in USD but it's gotta be at least $5K. Other $5K watches are made to take a beating.

I don't worry about the money at all. That's what's insurance is for.

I think in my eyes I call a watch I don't mind getting wet, scratched or beat up a beater and for me that's usually a modern Rolex because I know I'll be factory servicing it every 5-7 years and getting it polished and parts replaced and getting it back new looking again. I'd say the majority of modern Rolexes I see and modern Omegas are daily beaters due to the fact that they get worn day in day out and scuffed up without much worry, so they're daily beaters as opposed to safe queens like my SMPPs and A386 that don't get worn much for fear of damaging irreplaceable rare parts.

It doesn't actually refer to what it cost, but rather its ability to both stand up to daily abuse and be economically repaired and doesn't mean I don't care about it, for working on cars or activities that put a watch in direct danger I wear a Luminox that I genuinely don't care about as I got it for free with some 3rd party branding crap on it and at the gym or working out I go an Apple watch for similar reasons but for fitness tracking as well.

My three work beaters

Recent work trip to Japan

Work in a hands on job inspecting and climbing over everything from Oil rigs and large vessels to a 10m yacht, from used motorbikes to 789 cat dump trucks and practically everything in between.

To me beaters that I wear and enjoy

Sooo would I wear these that cost less, way less. ( NOT A CHANCE )

On my wrist out to dinner wouldn’t bother how much a watch cost.

Personally wouldn’t spend more that 30k on a watch. With a Speedmaster Tuesday and a Rolex Sub ( modern ) at the 10k mark. This is my sweet spot for wear anywhere besides work.
