Thanks! Well, new bezel is still worth it. I also had lot of difficulty installing it. Will have the stem length sorted out and sending over to local watchmaker.

The correct stem was maybe 1,5 mm shorter ? if i recall but my watchmaker had the correct one in stock so no need to cut it.
I messed up with the bezel by using a piece of silicon protection sheet over the crystal, this moved the bezel of balance and i pressed the steel ring out of shape. I can re-use the insert but just the steel holding ring can t be bought seperately - i wasnt able to find one at least - so i ordered some new. Hopefully next week i will have it and finish it.

Finally it is completed so another very happy owner here of a Racing Speedy

It is a lot of fun to configure a watch to your personal liking, and i chose the following ; 145.022 case with the MArk II Racing dial and wide "floating" hour and minute hands but i opted for a 321 style chronograph seconds hand as i prefer the slimmer shape and teardrop counter part. And there is already enough orange there. Crazy good dial for a + 40 year old watch !

The bezel is a base 1000 tachy

Still bright orange

Pretty sharp case too with just minor marks of use, i think it is from the 69 -74 era ?

The case got new pushers, crown and crystal, with that cute little logo in the center, from my Omega watchmaker

Cal 861 running strong still

And again for the racing idea , a non NASA caseback and a ratling straight end link bracelet in 60`s style

I also thought about using a minute bezel but i think i found a better match for it, and stayed with the tachy on the Racing. Now i am all set for either a Day at the Races or a Night at the Opera ;

It is a great watch to wear as well, it really pops on the wrist, thanks all for the inspiration and knowledge.

One beauty shot! By the way, the gap between the crown and the bezel is ca 0.3mm or so. I think I need to source a different crown that has a "longer neck".

Looks great !
I left my stem just a little bit longer to have more grip on my crown. But i also had a new crown fitted and maybe the original 70`s ones are flatter ?

One note when using ebay sapphire back. I have noticed that when I tighten the case back too much, the watch stops. So, I guess too much pressure.
I contacted the maker about this issue and received this reply:

The dial for the Speedmaster mark II is flat instead of domed, which means the movement is sitting lower in the case than it ought to. The bumper ring was designed to function with standard Speedmasters, but you may be able to eliminate the problem by replacing the bumper O-ring in the caseback (not the water-resistance gasket in the midcase) with a softer version so that it is less effective and allows your movement more freedom. This will likely account for the discrepancy between a standard movement with the domed or stepped Speedmaster dial versus a flat Mark II dial.

Very nice and great work OP.

you鈥檝e just reminded me I have a 4.5 of mid to late 70s in now similar condition and omega serviced that needs some time on the wrist!

Since coming across this thread last year I haven't been able to escape the pull of parting together one of these for myself, so I'm happy to say I started to gather the components for my "Mark Zwei" (trademark the title @eugeneandresson it's a good one). I'll post photos of my project racing when I gather more components; lost out on an eBay auction today for racing dial and hands but I think it was for the best as sourcing a complete 861 movement would probably prove to be challenging.

Anyways, reason I'm posting is that while going down the rabbit hole I came across one of these Mark ii Project Racing Speedmasters that was posted here on OF back in 2016 and I thought I'd share for those that may be interested.

@George.A originally posted it and may have more to share. I really dig the whole look of it and thought that maybe others would too!

So, are you planning to use modern service parts? Not vintage MKII dial, hands, movement etc?
There's one for sale on Chrono24 made out of modern parts.

I鈥檓 planning on using a vintage MKii dial, hands and movement as I really dig how the old tritium dials look. There is something about the 70鈥檚 racing dials that I can鈥檛 quite put into words yet, but I just keep coming back to them, looking at more and more examples.

For the modern one I posted, I had not yet seen an execution of all modern components and thought it was intriguing to see how the concept, while it鈥檚 not the path I鈥檓 going with mine, also looked good with the more recent dial and hands.
