Looking to buy this as my first vintage watch. Thoughts?

According to the seller, it's newly serviced, completely unpolished, and all parts are original (except for the strap). I tried looking online for info on this particular dial but I can't find a single identical one. Planning to buy it for roughly 1000 USD. Keen to hear everyone's opinions on this.

First, welcome to OF.
Second, congratulations on having the good sense to ask about the watch before you buy it.
Third, whilst not being the most knowledgeable member on OF, my opinion is that the reason why you can’t find a similar model is because this watch has a repainted fantasy dial which, to any collector, would be a no go area.
The photos, presumably the seller’s, suggest that you’re looking for a 1950’s style Omega and, personally, I’d keep on looking …

The seller is not being truthful, that dial is completely refinished and looks nothing like anything really made. That's a pretty rubbish watch, couple of hundred bucks worth.

It's well done in a way, I see why it would be attractive. Hope you find what you are looking for! If you will post a bit about what you want, someone can help.

In addition to the above, insanely overpriced for a gold filled cased watch.

I see the Instagram post advertising this, and there's a typo in the info. The reference number is GX6250, as shown on the case back. Other than what others are saying about the dial, if this model is was what you really like, try to find as many examples of this reference to get a better idea of what seems legit.

Wow, that's disappointing. But I appreciate your feedback. I wanted to go with this as I thought it was a rare find (other sellers were selling the usual Seamasters). I'll keep looking then. Thank you!

I know! But that's usually the going rate for 50s Seamasters where I'm from, at least the ones I've found so far.

I noticed that too. I don't have a particular model in mind, just looking for a gold vintage watch that's not too big (I'm female) and on the unique side.

Check eBay out for ‘1950 Seamaster’, ‘Omega cal 351’ and ‘cal 354’.

You’ll find options in the £400-700 range.

But check before you buy

Did you find a lot of gold-filled Seamasters? GF watches are MUCH less desirable and valuable than stainless, gold-capped, or (obviously) solid gold. It's important to develop an internal checklist for valuation of vintage watches: size, material, originality, condition ... many other factors. Any one of these things can kill the value if you fail to account for it.

If you haven't found it already, there's a site called Chrono24, that also has an app, where you can find second hand watches for sale. The prices tend be higher (instagram too for that matter), but I found it useful for at least researching different models and comparing conditions of vintage pieces. I like to filter out any thing made after a certain date (like 1970 and up), and then making note of the different references you like.

You can find great deals from Japan, there are a few sellers on ch24, but check your import fees.

For a first purchase, aim for $500, unless you are searching for a specific reference.

Take a look through the vintage omega models and get a feel for what you want, and make sure to check the size. Many are smaller than you would anticipate.

And I agree that starting here on the forum, on Reddit, or with a seller (e.g., on Instagram with some history) is a good place to start.

If you find a watch that can’t be cross referenced with other examples, then it’s probably not original. Google lens is your friend here.

When u see a black dial, consider it fake. Then prove yourself wrong. Saved me from many almost.
