I tried it on at Macy's and I really liked it

I am gonna say that this Quote persuaded me; it is in your range and you like it - sounds like a winner!

I would add, for a first watch, I like the idea of a good modern piece whose weather resistant qualities are still strong. It can sometimes be risky to wear the vintage out in the wet. Start with a daily wearer you like, then figure out what you like next.

Hamilton is fine. Victorinox makes some really nice automatics (same movements) that are tough as nails and good looking. I agree .. if this is to be daily wearer I would advise against vintage for the reasons @Ritzwatch stated. Gotta ageee on Seiko. Lots to chose from.

I am looking too for my first swiss watch. However I do like to fetch a vintage in the budget level. I have seen one Marvin in the sale section. Unfortunately on the wrong side of the pond...USA

For under a 1,000 you can get yourself a Tag Heuer fourmula 1 GMT. I think quite a few Tag Heuer can be found used in this price range.

For example, one of my favorites in rotation is a vintage omega from 1930-40. Works perfectly and looks great and I get compliments all the time, and I got it at auction and had it serviced ( and all in cost was about 500)

That isn't 1930s. As it is an auto I would think it is mid-late 40s using the bumper movement. The first Omega auto was in 1943 AFAIK. It is also likely a redial, though that may not be an issue of course.

Do like the look of that Hamilton. 😀

I'd also recommend Tissot. Steinhart and Roamer are also worth considering.
