The fact his name is on the ID card and that he’s insisting on insurance etc etc means absolutely nothing.
@reficul_x who’s an extremely experienced collector was once scammed by someone who offered all of the guarantees you might want or imagine, he did and said all the right things yet the watch never arrived. And as I recall that was about 4000 dollars, not 40K.

If the watch never arrives, do you think international’law enforcement will make it a priority to seek redress for some rich guy who took absurd risks with his money because he wanted a piece of jewelery?
Don’t you think they’ve got enough work with terrorism and trafficking of all sorts?
40K is a bucket load of cash to send to someone unknown- to even consider it seems totally reckless — and I agree with those who say a 20% discount seems too good to be true if the item is in high demand.
Best regards

There are members on this forum in Sweden. Perhaps find one and see if for a grand they would handle the transaction for you and the insured shipping.

I normally wouldn't consider sending funds without any prior references however there are a few things which are making me consider an exception to the rule...
But nothing so far proves the seller is either a) honest, or b) a scammer.
Oh, but wait -
...a face to face deal is out of the question due to travel restrictions. We discussed numerous payment options but the seller is insisting on either a face to face trade, or a direct wire transfer.
Hmm - s/he needs to accommodate your (I hope) unwillingness to throw 40k into the void (although you haven't told us just what that much means to you - we can't know that). Otherwise, it's not losing a 20% discount you should be worrying about. Remember, pressure to bag the bargain right now is a leading scam technique. Tell them you'll accept a lower discount provided you work through an escrow arrangement.

Any advice?
Nobody is forcing you to buy this in order to return your kids, right? You have got to remember that you can always walk away.

Remember that many of the OF sellers that have pages of positive reviews sell and can acquire many references that are never listed in the sale section. It might be worth sending a couple of PMs to a couple of them. I believe more than one deals with watches in that price range. Understandably it's more discrete. I can personally say that none of the watches I purchased from Kringkily were ever advertised.
Good Luck with your search.

High value transactions between two strangers are difficult to set up even when in the same country, even more difficult when they are international. I've done a couple but they require a lot of groundwork and a large dose of trust built up over emails, phone calls and reference checking. That's why most people go through auction houses or a dealer to buy/sell expensive pieces. You could use an escrow service but that has it's own issues and challenges. And international shipping on a 40k EURO item that is fully insured is going to be another challenge. And remember customs fees. Good luck.

We're talking a smidge over 40,000euros
This made me smile. While reading the thread I remembered a watch I sold to a member here. After 2 pm’s he sent the funds by bank wire, no questions other than bank account number. I’ve been here a while, but at the time I thought how trusting of him. It was a smidge under US$2K.
Your transaction is a completely different ballpark and, no I would not send that much by wire.

For this amount I would take very little risk. I'd rather transfer the money to somebody with solid references (as in: you know for sure he exists) after working out a way to let him pick up the watch and get it to you. And: if it sounds too good etc. Really.

No way would I do a deal like that with no references. Don’t think I would buy a 4K watch from someone with no references and insisting on a wire.
