I have had experience with Simon Freese, Johannes @ WatchGuy and also Brendan Hoey.

Can recommend all three!

I have been posting on other forums and just recently purchased my Omega, so I had no reason to be on here before. I do not feel the need to introduce myself. I had a bad experience and I posted it. Never had an issue on other forums where I asked questions without 'introducing myself'. I saw this post is about UK watchmaker so I posted my experience.

Here is the full correspondence. No rudeness from me at all. I am not "denigrating" someone's service if I got a bad reply from them for a friendly enquiry. I am allowed to have my opinions and as a customer, I do not like bad customer service. I ensure I am never rude to anyone. And like I said before, I would be paying for the service. Not asking for a freebie. Christian is the only person to reply to me like this. All others explained the costs/process to me and did not question my buying/service choices.

Hi!

I've read many great things about you online on forums.

I have a geneve 165.041 with a cal 552.

The seconds hand is stuttering and probably needs the seconds hand spring readjusted.

It's just recently been serviced. I was wondering how much this would cost and would it be something you'd do?

Attached is a video of it stuttering around 5-10s.

Hi ____,

Thank you for your email. I would suggest letting the person who did the service to the adjustment of the spring?

Best wishes,

Christian

Hi,

Unfortunately it was serviced abroad so I would end up paying more for postage, hence why I came to you as have heard many good things about you.

Looking to get it serviced by you in 3yrs time as well.

Hi ___,

As you took the decision to have it serviced abroad, I think you should follow that through and have the stuttering sorted out there as well.

I really don't like sorting out other people's work.

Best wishes,

Christian

Well this is certainly not my experience with him. He did once refuse a watch repair from me but explained politely that it’s not the sort of watch he liked to work on. I sent it elsewhere and was not offended.

perhaps other watchmakers here will offer reasons for being reluctant to sort out bad repairs.

As for the way to make your mark on a forum, I don’t know about others - this is the only watch community I’m part of. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a first post of this nature. What did you hope to achieve by it?

I was hoping to achieve to answer with my experience of the question "So, I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good watchmaker in the UK that I could approach for a service I can rely on." which is the question which this thread started on.

Exactly, the question was approach for a service, not approach to resolve an issue with a watch recently serviced elsewhere. Honestly it doesn't read as particularly rude to me. You asked if it's something he'd do and you got your answer.

Personally, I see nothing rude in Christian's response. Perhaps not the response you wanted but that is a different matter.

I see, although I'm not sure how a negative post about a watchmaker constitutes a recommendation, which is what the OP was asking for. If you can recommend someone for the OP, and the rest of us, please do so.

If you wanted to share your experience, a separate thread along the lines of "this happened to me and I feel annoyed / upset / insulted (delete as applicable) ... what do people think, was this an unreasonable response to my request?" might have been a more interesting and useful contribution.

I have had a bad experience with Watch Guy.
Asked a question for a fix for my Vintage omega but got a rude reply back about my choices to buy from abroad and not being able to send it back abroad for a fix and 'not fixing other people's errors'. Mind you I am paying him to fix the watch, not asking for free.
Shame as I will look elsewhere for servicing my mechanical watches.
This hasn’t been my experience in the slightest. Their work is exemplary and extremely transparent. As another user said, best of luck looking elsewhere.

Having read his response I can understand why it might have bothered you but from the point of view of accountability I can understand why he didn’t want to touch it. Say he ‘fixes’ it but actually the stuttering is due to an inherent issue with the movement and it returns. Who’s then to blame? WatchGuy get a lot of requests for service so they’re in the fortunate position where they’re able to say no to requests if it’s not in their interest to do the work. If a watch is serviced and has a problem, first port of call should always be to send back to the person who did it. And I don’t think having to send it abroad is an excuse - WatchGuy get people sending in watches from the world over. If the previous service was at fault then they ought to pay for the post.

perhaps other watchmakers here will offer reasons for being reluctant to sort out bad repairs.

If the watch left some other shop with one problem, there’s a chance it has more problems. As I’ve said many times before, watch repair is like a game of tag...the last person to touch the watch is it. No matter what the cause of any future problems might be, it will be attributed to the last person to touch the watch.

So for many watchmakers, myself included, I will only do a full service and will turn down small repairs like this. It had nothing to do with the watch being bought somewhere else.

In the end, Christian can turn down work for whatever reason he wants to...

This is the exact response I would have given you. No partial repairs in my workshop.
