·For me, 2022 was the year I chose to embrace again my passion for watches after a self-imposed "exile" that spanned almost a decade. The forced sale of my collection between 2012 and 2014 has now been digested, and the near-miraculous return of my prized pre-Moon 145.022-69 Speedmaster has made me a happy beyond words. I can now look ahead at rebuilding a collection, albeit at a more measured pace than the frenzy of the mid-2000s.
But I wish to acknowledge that all this was made possible thanks to a few passionate people who were ready to help me, and I wanted to pay my respect for their role in allowing me to see horology as something positive.
First, I would like to thank Paul, administrator of the Seiko 7A38 forum, for not only safekeeping the chronograph I had sent him a decade previously for repair, but also allowing me to get it back fully serviced and cosmetically refreshed. This was a late Christmas gift that arrived in January.
Then I wish to thank Anthony, co-author of the "Moonwatch Only" Speedmaster bible, for patiently providing me with advice and an accurate view of today's market as I was slowly devising the project of attempting to buy "my" Speedmaster from the collector I had sold it to at the end of 2013. While sobering, his advice was invaluable.
Of course, the biggest thank you has to go to Rob, who not only was receptive to my desire to reacquire my Moonwatch from him, but actually did his utmost to make it easier for me. Given my attachment to this particular example, he could have fleeced me, but chose instead to offer me a price well below what he could have obtained on the open market. While it was still well over twice he had paid it for in 2013, it was a very gracious and gentlemanly thing to do, and I'll be forever in debt for that gesture.
Finally, I also wish to acknowledge a member of this forum who, upon reading that I needed spare links for my original 1171 bracelet, made me a very generous offer for a few he had at the back of a drawer. What's more, he also sold me a brand new US Holzer bracelet for a fraction of its actual price. So thank you Sander. It was a pleasure to get acquainted with you this way.
So, who were your good Samaritans last year?
