Longines L847.4 ?

Hello everybody,

Still relatively new to this forum, I have mostly been looking at vintage Omegas. I found a small Longines that I could gift for Christmas. Price is rather cheap and I know nothing about this reference so I am suspicious.
Looked on the internet and found two different sets of hands on the watches pictured.
You cannot really see details on the Longines hourglass logo, that was weird to me.
Swiss made is massive.
I requested picture of the movement and inner caseback but still haven’t received any.
Any thoughts ?

Thank you for all your knowledge, always.

Tom

The Longines cal. 847 is an early-1970s manual wind caliber, sort of an update to the previous 420/428.

With cal. 847.3 you have a watch made for the European market, whereas cal. 847.4 is designated for the U.S. market, which at that time still had different models from the rest of the world. That makes it harder to find documentation about the exact model, but from what I have seen, there was a wide variety of models and dials produced with these movements. Almost an obscure collecting field by itself.

It is a good quality manual wind movement, beating at 21.600 bph and with a 40 hr power reserve. The watch you have shown doesn't appear to be very patinated (water resistance is a problem, so a lot of dials become damaged) - so if you like the style, go for it 😀

Here's my 1974 ref. 7823 with the 847.3 for comparison:

Thank you for your response !
Adding the movement picture and caseback here. Again, not looking like what I found online so far, haha ..!

Edit : so definitely not the movement I thought I would find but the case being 22mm, it makes sense I guess…
I found a similar shaped caliber in watches that size online. Still sceptical here.

I think I will pass on this one. I am too doubtful about the movement and the seller’s other watches..
If someone can confirm and educate me on this, I would very grateful.

Thank you very much again.

I see no reason to doubt the watch. It's just not a particularly collectible watch or from a desirable era, so it's not surprising that you don't find much online.

Thank you Dan for your response.
I get your point.
It just looked easy, inexpensive and cute for a girl so I looked into it. I should not worry that much, haha.
