Leather Laptop Bag

Hi All,

The "What Non-Watch Brands Are You Intensely Loyal To?" has got me thinking but I didn't want to derail it.

I carry my laptop computer to and from work every day and hate the bulky and cheap bag that was provided. Looking for recommendations for a leather bag (maybe messenger-style) that is good looking, well made, durable, and will age gracefully. Since I don't know much about leather goods I looking for brand recommendations. My preference is to buy quality and buy once with it hopefully lasting 20 to 25 years. I'd like to keep it under $300 but that number has some flexibility to it.

. . .and go. . .

I have a couple different Saddleback products. They are exceptionally nice and very well-made.

Saddlebacks are nice bags. I have a coworker who owns one and it’s aged beautifully. I ordered a shoulder bag (manpurse) from them and it was beautifully made, but couldn’t stand up on its own (kept flopping over), which is a deal breaker for me- but i think it was just the proportions of that particular bag.

Just as a fun vintage wild-card, I’ve owned this Coach satchel for about 15 year and it was well used when I got it (probably about 30 years old at this point).

I carried it daily but the bag weighed more than the contents most of the time (the cost of carrying leather). Pieces like this pop up on eBay periodically and they last forever.

if you want a messenger bag, get a real messenger bag, not a leather briefcase with a flap and a long strap. It will be uncomfortable. Take it from someone who commutes to work on a bike and often carries a laptop. A couple I suggest are:

https://bedouinfoundry.com/products/barbary

neither are leather, but are waxed canvas. Which is a lot better if it might get wet.

A leather satchel like others have recommended is fine, as long as your realize it’s just a briefcase/satchel with a strap.

I am a big fan of Victorinox, so I got one of those.

You know what though?

Depending on what you have, I've just used a vintage briefcase like this:

I can fit a MacBook Pro and an Apple Mouse in there, comfortably. That's all I need to go, for example, to the Toyota dealer to entertain myself while my car is worked on.

These things are all over eBay for cheap because you can't shove a lot of crap you don't need into it. 😀

If you decide that Victornox fits your style, go to eBay to get older versions which are just as good for a lot less.

ZERO Halliburton is ne plus ultra, but prices match. Also try to buy on the secondary market.

That thread is still full of amazing ideas.

the guy that made it is a little weird though 😉

Mira funny how my tastes have changed slightly since that thread and some of those options are a lot more attractive.

the drop in price for the British items makes a few very tempting as well lol.

Ruittertassen make some very sturdy and classic leather cases.

I switched from leather to Victorinox business gear years ago. Backpack, briefcase and expanding roller(for which I was teased unmercifully) … all wore like iron.

Wow, the video on construction of the Saddleback Leather bags is amazing. I like things that were built to last a lifetime.
