now, with these automatic movements, do they need winding at the crown to get them going initially?

You shouldn’t have to worry about “over winding” it, but you also shouldn’t need more than 20-30 rotations of the crown to go from stopped to plenty of power.

·Yes, my experience is similar. It needed a good wind to begin, and if I’m reasonably active during the day it works just fine. If I’m too sedentary (like one day when I was in the car and then mass transit for most of the day) it has once or twice stopped early the next morning. I was a little worried about this, since I thought they are supposed to have power reserves—? But mine may need a servicing anyway.

If starting from dead, I generally give it 1-2 winds instead of a shake. Normal movement is enough to keep it going through until the next morning
