It鈥檚 hard for us to explain this to normal people as we just know. It鈥檚 like an instinct, an extra thing normal people don鈥檛 get. I can try to explain it but I will need @janice&fred to hold my beer

silly question, you seem to like that phrase - for those of us who didn鈥檛 grow up in English speaking countries what does it mean?
It means the Pyramids are older than time. Ask your Egyptian friends if they know where it comes from.
Your guess about a colonial relic is not a million miles from correct. I heard it during a perfomance of the old Son et Lumiere soundtrack at the Pyramids voiced by Lawrence Olivier. They've probably changed it by now. As to where it originally comes from no idea.
I worked in Egypt for many years and every now and then visitors meant another trek to the Pyramids for the sound and light show.
Since we are all interested in time telling it seemed appropriate for my profile pic.

Impressive. I consider myself fortunate for seeing the Great Wall of China鈥檚 and other historic parts of the country. I imagine seeing the pyramids must be amazing. Time and the elements had done a number on them but such is true with all things. I haven鈥檛 traveled extensively but every time I have it鈥檚 great seeing other countries and cultures. I have a family member who travels often for his employer, some beautiful countries including Egypt. He hates it. Not the countries themselves but the whole travel thing in general. I always think it鈥檚 a shame he doesn鈥檛 make time to enjoy the sites. I think it鈥檚 more family issues though so I shouldn鈥檛 judge

Not trying to wander in here, but it amazes me that Platinum is HALF the price of Gold ($910oz vs $1800), but the Platinum Watch category is much more valuable. Thoughts?

I think it works equally well if you replace 'pyramids' with 'Chuck Norris'.

I think it means that the Pyramids are the only thing which time cannot effect.

It might be an Egyptian proverb but their sayings are usually a bit more spiteful;
"In the countryside envy is a legacy."
"He who eats alone chokes alone."
"If you overpraise your slave he'll show you his arse."
Kenyans have more accessible sayings;
"Only when my enemy feels my spear will he hear my words."
Any good sayings from where you are from?

Little envious of you. Haven't made it to the Great Wall yet. As a Speedie owner one has an obligation.

As clumsy as a emu trying to shag a jam tin rolling down a hill.

Not worth a squirt of hot cockys piss on a wet road.

Flat out like a lizard drinking

My dad bet on gold and silver going up in the 1980s and bought near the peak. Luckily, he only bought a few krugerrands and silver bars, but when he eventually sold them, it was a loss of several thousand dollars. If only he鈥檇 spent the same amount on Rolex Submariners and Daytonas....

I come from a family of gold bugs (grandfather and uncles were goldsmiths), and there were many attempts to make a lot of money on gold. Grandpa also got creamed in the 80s at the top - he was good at jewelry but terrible at investing. My dad, on the other hand, hates investing but bought a lot of gold at $400/oz about 15 years ago and sold at $1600 and it's given him a comfortable retirement. I guess my point is that gold is a little bit random and doesn't totally follow market logic.

For my part I'm thinking of selling some of grandpa's gaudy 70's 18k rings for scrap and buying watches, so I'm in the opposite mindset...

Maybe because platinum was never used as money as far as I know

Nice story! Good to hear. Yr father was really smart!
They say that fear prompts people to buy gold. Greed prompts all the other speculative investments.
If one believes in the dollar then why would you buy gold? If you think gold might go a bit above 2k/oz then head back down then meaning is you are confidant in a strong stable dollar for the next ten years. Otherwise more people will experience the wheelbarrow moment I mentioned before when a worker stopped off on the way home to buy bread in Weimar Germany. He had his weeks wages piled up in the wheelbarrow which he left outside while he went in for bread. When he came out all the money was lying higgeldy piggeldy on the ground and the wheelbarrow had been stolen.
Or we get deflation like Japan.
