Just need a little feedback... Ladies Rolex - yay or nay?

I'm Team Omega, through and through (i.e. I know nothing about Rolex) - but I was unexpectedly tempted by a circa early 1980's ladies Rolex today when picking up another piece that was in for service. It looked so plain and good by itself among all these gaudy monstrosities. I just felt like it should be saved and come home with me. 😀 I'm experienced enough a shopper to know NOT to make an emotional purchase (especially one in the 4 figures). I did a little research, but I just want to see if there's anything I should consider that I didn't uncover on my own or haven't realized.

The watch has been professionally authenticated, cleaned, serviced, and refinished (case and band only, not face/dial); it will come also with a 1 year service warranty through my jeweler. All original, but important to note that this is not a "datejust". Bracelet has very slight signs of stretch - fits me perfectly out of the case (comfortable, no give). HATE it when that happens... Didn't know that ladies bands tend to stretch out more because women wear their watches looser, more like bracelets, than men do. Who knew? I understand that ladies watches don't hold their value as well as men's, but I don't have an everyday watch, and I'm very tempted to pick this one up. The list price is $2,890 - or $3,133 after tax. I was a little surprised at first, but my research seems to say that's pretty reasonable.

Just trying to round out all my self-education before I decide to take the plunge - any advice/info is appreciated!

Looks fine, price is very high for a lady's model.

That's what I needed to hear. What do you think is a more reasonable asking price? Something someone more familiar with these wouldn't balk at?

Wow that's too high. U could get a datejust for much less. Jfyi, datejust is more expensive than date because quick setting the date.

I blame it on the autoconnect.

Thank you! I had a gut feeling, and I'm glad it's being proven right. I'll keep my eyes peeled, but I think I'll pass on this one...

remember asking my price is it sales price. Checking comparable prices on the internet can give inflated values when a lot of people are asking way above sales price. Look at comparable watches that actually sell.

My initial thoughts felt this was high for a ladies watch.

Thank you. I have been tracking/watching some ongoing auctions on Ebay just to see what the end results are. Since I'm not an expert, and know less than little about Rolex, I haven't been brave enough to attempt to purchase one online. I think I was more tempted to purchase in-store to save myself possible grief...!

You should definitely look at Ebay-- and also consider Tudor Oysters.
There are some great ones for a fraction of the price. And you can always consult with people here as you just did to make sure it's okay.

Is that one a 26mm?

I bought a 31mm Oyster Perpetual TT with Oyster bracelet for my wife, one year ago, for 1500 euro.

So that price doesn't seem too high. Is too high

With some patience, I'd say you can find one of these for US$1500 or less.

Nay. The price is too high. Looks like polished away more than just slightly signs of wear. Why pay a jewelers price? Service could be done later.. As said; have patience.. 😉

B t w I bought this in excellent condition for my wife for about €1500. Another reference, but I suppose a TT jubilee in good shape should just cost a few hundred more…

I know less about women's watches then I do men's which is not a whole lot either but that price just seams high compared to what I have seen in the past. Like some of the other members said if you are patient you will find one for much less, probably in the FS forum here. As an example my girlfriend just bought a ss oysterdate precision, I know it's an older and completely different reference but as an example, that was only $825. (btw that's my hairy arm not hers)

Price is probably too high and with all the Rolexes floating around out there you'll most definitely find another example in better condition...

Attached a photo of my oyster perpetual. Love it for those days when I don't feel like wearing "men's" watches....

I think this one is also a manual winder, not a Perpetual! An important consideration when trying to compare prices, I think!

yes it is a manual. I was not comparing prices as much as saying if she is patient she will find a perpetual for less then that one posted. I was just using this one as an example since in jewelry stores these manual models list for around $2000, online forums around $1200-$1400 but with some searching deals come up.

My wife has been wearing a white gold lady president for over a decade. It is super low key (she does not like bling), and tough as nails.

I suspect that has the older acrylic crystal. The bracelet appears to me to be the old style, not the modern "Geneva" model. It shows signs of wearing loose, which is a common problem with steel and gold bracelets. If I am not mistaken, this model likely dates from the 1980s, and back then they were 14-karat yellow gold ( not 18 karat). That is, if it was sold new in North America. The quality of the image makes it difficult to judge how much wear there is on the fluted bezel! Based on all these factors, you have to try to judge how much life is left in this watch! I don't like it at any price! This watch could well be about 40 years old. It has been my experience that Rolex ladie's watches age more rapidly than gent's Rolex!

You might have to pay more for the newer Rolex Lady Date-Just with the newer Geneva bracelet, 18-karat, with the sapphire crystal, but you'll enjoy the right watch for years, and hate the wrong watch!

Wow - so thankful for the outpouring of excellent advice. I'm so glad I posed the question, and I'm definitely walking away from it. I've done some more research based on what you all have shared, and while I'm pretty settled on a ladies Date-Just (very reassuring to hear/see all the ladies D-J's holding up well/being enjoyed here), I think I'm going to be patient as advised and hold out for a circa 70's-80's 14k yg version... thanks, all! 😀
