It is the approximate duration of the lunar month (and putting the actual number with decimals would look odd).

Does anyone know why the older Master Moon had the 0 to 29 1/2 seconds labels? So odd... what's the purpose of that? Why not just label it 0 to 30? I thought it must be some flyback mechanism at first, but the seconds hand just continues around into the unlabeled area as a normal second hand would. So what's up with the "29 1/2"? I mean there's not even a tickmark so it's by its nature inaccurate, so the precision of "29 1/2" seems really odd. Anyone have a better explanation for why JLC did this?

If I'm not wrong, it's a synodic month, which is 29.53 days from new moon to new moon

Wait... so i thought that dial was a seconds dial. it's a "day of the lunar month" dial? so what does it mean when the hand is pointing in the lower half of the dial? i'm confused. sorry for my dumb questions...

1.The subdial is labelled differently in the old and new versions. In the old, it says 0-29 1/2 , the new one says 15-60
2. Regardless of the labelling, the moonphase and second hands do the same thing.
3. The labelling serves 2 purposes - for the old, it tells you roughly how far along you are in the synodic month based on the position of the moon; for the new, it tells you where the second hand is from 0-60
4. So for the new MC , if you look at Adam's 1st picture of this thread, the second hand shows 38 seconds, while the moonphase (I think) shows it's almost at the end of the synodic month.

Hope this clarifies!

Fell in love with this watch a while ago. Classic understated design. I bought my rose gold version in France, beat the taxes and got a better base price than the us dealers I spoke to. It's accurate as heck. I parked the alligator strap for a Horween shell cordovan strap. It goes with a polo and jeans or a suit.

Congrats on an awesome piece, and thanks for starting this thread. I've learned a lot about this model.

I'm surprised (and gratified) that this thread is still being added to. Here is a more recent (and probably better) photo of mine.

It is a beautiful watch! I find it kind of funny though that even at that level, manufacturers will still put "automatic" on the dial. It just seems so un-necessary.

I guess I haven't been paying attention but JLC has removed it from some models that used to have it. And where it hasn't, it's a mix of Automatic and Automatique, mostly the latter.
