Sometimes a band or bracelet is made with a 16mm band with ends of 18mm or 20mm and are meant to be filed down to fit whatever watch you chose it for.
Some of my older watches have 17.5mm lugs so require careful filing and fitting of modern 18mm band ends regardless.

Although Alan Shepard didn't wear a wrist watch on his sub-orbital MR-3 flight in May 1961, he wore an Accutron Astronaut tuning fork watch as a back-up for Leroy Gordo Cooper's MA-9 mission in May 1963... both on steel mesh Komfit-Forstner ( later Jacoby Bender Champion ) bracelet

Unfortunately being in Aus, the availability of these is quite rare so the avenues of purchasing are most likely via the US or eBay, from sellers who know what people are prepared to pay. I'm sure bargains can be had, but by goodness it's more like @350USD-$400USD at best rather than $10 馃
I'll inevitably track one down, hopefully at a cost that's not too painful.[/QUOTE]

$350-400 is a steal for the mesh bracelets, so grab it and run. All the sales listings I鈥檝e seen are double that price.

Ouch! That鈥檚 unfortunate looking at the clasp. It looks like someone tried to adjust the sliding clasp not by pulling up the flip lock but prying up the cross bar. Can鈥檛 imagine any other way that damage could have happened. Bummer.

@hmmmcamu that is a phenomenal combination on the Seamaster. Well done. I鈥檒l put my JB on my Rolex 1675 sometimes and really enjoy the retro look and feel.

" KOMFIT " JB Champion USA SS bracelet

Nicely done. In another thread, I was fielding opinions about whether these bracelets cause excessive wear between the lugs because the end-pieces are not stabilized, as with some other bracelets. If you wear your JB bracelets a lot, I would appreciate your insights on this. Thanks.

wear and tear on lugs ... i rotate my bracelet / strap options for my 120 from the Komfit u see above, back to its original 1096 bracelet, and switch over to a 19 mm Swiss Tropic ... see condition of lugs in the photo below ... answer in the case of my particular watch .... no it does Not ... see last photo .. the spring loaded end link and how it rests after it is mounted ...

There use to be a great online reference by the guys that wrote the Moonwatch Only books but it seems to have been reduced to just a bit of information about the use of the bracelets seen here. I believe the second edition of the MWO book has a great bit of information regarding the types of JB bracelets that are believed to have been used by NASA.

The bracelet you picture above has not been flown before. @SpeedyPhill recently posted a picture with Deke Slayton wearing a Bulova astronaut watch with what possibly could be this style bracelet but the resolution is inconclusive to my eye and I would be inclined to say it's not. Many sales listing will add "NASA style" to their listings because I believe they think it will add to the value and some buyers are not really informed about the correct style used during the time period and may be swayed by the allure of the NASA connection.

In my conversations with the astronauts about the use of the bracelet it was indeed selected in part because it could in fact be removed easier in the case of an emergency just like the Velcro could easily be cut through in an emergency as well. While the bracelets appear fragile they are quite robust and strong. That is why I always find it amusing that people are concerned that they will just fall off their wrist and avoid wearing them. That said, the instructions to the astronauts in the event one needed to be removed was to use a knife, screwdriver, or other flat object and twist thus snapping the spring bar connection from the watch case. This is in fact the weakest connection in the watch/bracelet set up.

After all these years it still warms my heart to see them on the JB Champion bracelets.
Go ahead, twist! JK It gives me the creeps just seeing the screwdriver wedged in there.

Putting a cat among the pigeons in this NASA JB-Champion topic...
As it looks like Apollo 12 astronaut Charles "Pete" Conrad wore another type of JB-Champion steel mesh bracelet. (NASA photo September 1969)
The mesh looks tighter and the closure is of a flatter type (see the gold version here below):

I'm sure the bracelet is the JB Champion NASA style bracelet worn at the time. I'm 100% confident that what you are seeing is a watchband calendar folded over the mesh. The red seen is advertising that was common on the calendars as many of them were giveaways with company names on them. If you also look closely you can see the fold over tabs on the corners.

Conrad and Cernan are two that are seen wearing the JB bracelet with the watch face on the inside of their wrists. I've tried to put my watch on in this fashion and trying to secure the clasp is absolutely bizarre.

Indeed astronaut Gene Cernan, mostly wearing Speedmaster face inside of the wrist... also for James McDivitt here during Apollo 9 training 50 years ago...

Late 1970s - early '80s you could pick a year set of these for free from some stands at tech industry trade shows. I was attending petro-chem and computer exhibitions and had no problem getting a supply for my '60s Carrera. To my recollection they were generaly not branded. Or did I employ a scalpel and straight-edge to cut the branding off?

Then I decided I needed to get modern and bought a quartz Omega with (oh the horror) a date window. Rarely wore it, preferred the Carerra 馃槈

I love these bracelets. Has anyone noticed a softening in the prices lately?
