Though I must say, the lady bug is definitely giving the Elgin a run for it's money. It's really fun you can share this interest with your mother-in-law like this.

I saw a nice manual wind Oris ladybug at auction a couple of months ago. It looked pretty cool. May be should have bid, I think it went with a group for under $100.

Congrats on that Elgin. It looks like it could be a cousin to this diver, which has a similar FHF movement.

@Aroxx ... your best post EVER.

Congratulations, and yes I am jealous -- not so much the watches as the cool MiL. Mine just sits around drinking generic/unbranded White Claw with Mountain Dew and prattling on about sales at Walmart.

Oh that’s very nice! Looks like the same second hand. I have a thing for orange second hands now. I didn’t even know the American brands made stuff like this. So much cool stuff out there to discover!

Awww thanks! It took me awhile but I made it! Yea my MIL is amazing. She helps out a ton with the kids too. She’s a lifesaver.

Found homes for those two bracelets too. The Skagen one is definitely better quality. The other one is a bit stiff. I had to file the end links down ever so slightly on both to get them to fit.

They moved 😀
Yes, I admittedly didn’t know anything about them. I was wondering about the Swiss made. I see they went defunct around 1968 and the name got sold around. I do want to get some American pocket watches in the future. Half the fun for me, and most of us I think, is learning the history. 😀

The plot thickens. I asked my MIL to bring that “not a Flightmaster” over so I could check the bracelet. She brought everything over. Kids starting to go through it and now I need to try to resize bracelets to fit a 5 year old and change batteries.

Here’s the not-a-Flightmaster. Doesn’t run.

Ok, back to the plot. MIL had these and gave them to me. And just like that I’m in the pocket watch game. She also said she has more stuff somewhere and is looking. Both are running but need service. I’m pulling pretty hard on the crown on the Elgin and can’t get it to come out to set the time. Maybe I’m doing something wrong.

Elgin (the American one 😉)

Waltham. This one wasn’t running. When I pulled the crown and set the time it felt stuck but immediately broke loose and the hands moved freely and the watch starting running.

I hope I’m not coming off like a braggart about all this free stuff. It’s just been a crazy couple days and months with watches for me and it’s fun taking pictures and sharing. Also, I think if I mention the word “watch” to my wife one more time she is going to kill me. The only downside to all this is figuring out and paying for servicing. I want it all running top notch NOW lol! Thanks for following along!

The case of the Elgin will pay for a service. I’d have to see the rest of it but the case is prob worth more than the rest of the lot combined. (Looks like 16s, half hunter, solid 14k?)

I’m sorry, I don’t know anything about pocket watches. What is 16s and half hunter? It’s 14k and the case measures 40mm in diameter. I hadn’t considered selling it. I think it would be sweet to have a gold pocket watch. 😀 Not sure that’s what my MIL had in mind either when she gave it to me.

Can’t stop, won’t stop. Apparently she threw some other stuff in the pile. These things are all so tiny you practically need a loupe to tell the time. All running. A Girrard Perregaux my MIL knew the original owner it’s engraved for. 2 Hamiltons and a Longines.

16s = size; American pocket watches most popular sizes were 12s, 16s, 18s ... call it small, medium and large (40mm sounds more like a 12s size)

Google case styles for full definition but basically 2 covers that pop open, not with extra hinged dust covers (4 covers so to speak)

Not saying to sell it, just pointing out there's gold in them there boxes 😎

Thank you! Yes I will research and learn more. It is on the smaller side and has a dust over over the movement. Other than my wedding band it’s the only gold I’ve ever had so I feel a bit like Gollum with it right now. 😁

Great looking Elgin for sure. Some of those other watches remind me that the 90s wasnt as awesome as I remember it being
