http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/Tudor-Heritage-Black-Bay-One-Reference-7923-Only-Watch

Previously I've made tongue-in-cheek comments on the whole hipster aspect of the site which, apparently, wasn't allowed and I've even had parts of a dialogue between me and other commenters removed, for reasons unknown.

Hipsters and their old timey bullshit have infected everything. They're like locusts, except if locusts had beards, wore vintage smoking jackets and prided themselves on being exactly the same but in their weak locust minds being different from "sad, ironic normal locusts".

Apropos of, for some reason, hipsters love MMA and more specifically, the UFC organization. It annoys me that a sport which I'm involved with on a few different levels is infected with these beardo weirdos.

It's classic reaction formation to their homogeneous and safe suburban upbringing. The violence of MMA stands in stark relief to their politically correct, helicopter parented existence. There also exists this weird passive-aggressive sexual tension between hipsters and MMA fighters. I'm pretty sure it has to do with the beta male (hipsters) and alpha male (pro fighters) dynamic. These "MMA hipsters" are obsessed with the bodies of the fighters. Lol it's freaking bizarro!

I wonder if Clymer follows the UFC - I bet he does. lol

Well, it does occasionally happen, but VERY rarely. Overly suggestive pictures and curse laden tirades do sometimes end up on the cutting room floor, but we try to let the reality show that is Omega Forums play out as close to naturally as possible for our audience.

I visit Watchville 2/3 times per week and, inevitably, stumble across Hodinkee.

I've noticed lately a remarkable bias towards certain brands, most notably Tudor and I do find it quite off-putting. I'd trust the honest reviews of OF members far more than I would the people who work for and/or run that site.

At least here you get an unbiased warts and all opinion of a watch rather than those sucking up to the major Swiss manufacturers.

Just my two cents.

Hey @meganfox17 love the enthusiasm as always - would you mind not posting a ton of animated GiF's on threads though?

For those of us on low bandwidth it makes it hard to load the pages. 馃榾

Thanks for your understanding. 馃憤

Any website can be run like a business, but they should not pretend being unbiased if there is definite commercial "pressure".

ps: I have no opinion on Hodinkee yet.

I admire their enthusiasm as I have yet to read a negative review of a watch. Sort of if I should review sex with Victoria's Secret models.

Also annoying that half the articles are updates on new watches for sale in their shop.

Watch "journalism" rarely has much in the way journalism involved - I would say there's more here on this forum than you will find on most watch blogs. If they are getting watches from companies to review, they are unlikely to bite the hands that feed them said watches...

Once again, Mr. Cranky (sry Al lol) hits the nail right out of the park (huh?).

Almost by definition, watch journalism = marketing. What else can it be?

Also, Omegaforums is the best watch site, period

I'm actually not very cranky...at least most of the time. There was no "crankiness" involved in the post above, just the truth. 馃榾

Note - smiley added to ensure no crankiness is construed from this post.

I find that Hodinkee is a bit like daytime television.

If you have the ability to figure out which articles are "advertorials" (paid or subsidized content), and which are more honest articles, it can be a great source of information.

I take all reviews of new watches from Hodinkee with a grain of salt. Their speciality is in vintage, which is also a market segment that is of little interest to manufacturers. The secondary market benefits them only in the perpetuation of their brand's reputation.

I would believe modern production watches are where Hodinkee gets "assistance" in some way, likely in exchange for "airtime" and a positive recommendation from time to time.

I wonder the process for watches is as bad as it is for cars: http://ajrarchive.org/Article.asp?id=5141

I can only comment from the point of view of a maker. I get requests to supply watches for review pretty regularly, and it's often in exchange for a free watch. All such requests are politely declined. The most egregious example was getting separate requests on the same day, from 2 different people at the same site, telling me in detail about their "unbiased reviews" that they would give me in exchange for a free watch. It was clear that the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing, so I copied and pasted one of their emails into the other and sent my reply back to both of them, stating that I don't give watches away in exchange for reviews, and that they should really coordinate their requests a little better. 馃槈

I have only ever supplied one watch for a review that I can recall, and that was because I knew the reviewer personally.

The last request was from Canadian Geographic magazine earlier this year, as the publisher was doing an article on the watch industry in Canada. When I expressed only luke warm interest in the project, and told him I usually decline such requests, he went on and on about how much exposure I would get from it. I don't deny he was right, but it was a pretty open admission that it was really mostly a marketing exercise, with a little bit of industry focus included. I asked some follow-up questions, but they were never answered. I have no idea if the project ever went forward...

Their speciality is in vintage,

Besides the occasional "Talking Watches" or "Reference Points" posts, the only regular vintage content on Hodinkee are either their Bring A Loupe feature (on vintage watches for sale around the internet) or their Store features (on vintage watches for sale on their own website).

It's really become a modern press-release / review site, though I do think their "Week on the Wrist" articles are fairly well written in comparison to many of their competitors.
