Am I the only one who is fed up with that place? I realise that they have all the right in the world to conduct a certain editorial line, but the way that comments are moderated before published and their constant fanboy-ism of certain brands are driving me nuts. So the logical conclusion, for me, is to avoid them from now on.

    http://www.hodinkee.com/blog/Tudor-Heritage-Black-Bay-One-Reference-7923-Only-Watch

I tried adding a comment on whether or not Hodinkee themselves had been sponsored by Tudor in the past, as a sidenote to one of the other comments - not published. Previously I've made tongue-in-cheek comments on the whole hipster aspect of the site which, apparently, wasn't allowed and I've even had parts of a dialogue between me and other commenters removed, for reasons unknown.

Then there is the whole persona cult of the place, which is really annoying, but by not spending too much time in the comments section and read the love letters to the writers posted there, I can at least avoid those…

Just wanted to let off some steam, as this is one of those subjects that are met by blank stares by friends/girlfriend/colleagues

Oh, and btw - thank God for OF, at least there is one corner of the internet that remains a safe haven without constricting rules, where off-beat humour is allowed and common sense prevails.

$$$ drives many sites. "Moderation" and "Censorship" are synonyms on many forums.

Nothing wrong with moderation as long as it's applied with moderation.

Regarding that Tudor, I like it but they should have used a lollipop second-hand.

Maybe I don't know what a lollipop second hand looks like, but from what I can see that's what it has. Would welcome any feedback.

You know what, I am blind. Nevermind about my comment. Bravo Tudor! But I still prefer OMEGA. :D

The lollipop hand is useless without a bidirectional 0-11 GMT bezel anyway.

Ok, so I'm not imagining things. The location of the lollipop at the end of the second hand does make it harder to see IMO.

I like these watches, but never feel compelled to buy one. Initially I thought I might, but have lost interest.

I agree, Omega or Longines are what I prefer.

Hodinkee's a business, not a public service. There's no constitutional right of free speech. Does your favorite car, wine or (insert enthusiast item here) mag publish a lot of letters to the editor from cranky readers accusing them of selling-out to advertisers and putting on a front that the reader finds is inauthentic?

For my part I regret the loss of the emphasis on vintage and of a certain spirit of discovery that left not long after the advertising came, but as I wasn't willing to send Ben a monthly check, I accept his right to make a living.

Agree wholeheartedly about the editorial rights, I just find the degree of editing amazingly constricting and I've stopped visiting the place, not reported them to the police or anything ;)

It was interesting reading Ben Clymers response to recent criticism on the site after readers expressed their outrage at HODINKEE doing a review on a new Ferrari - he came across very well and it very much sounds like they're at a cross roads now with commercialising the site.

Mass generic journalism appeals to a wider audience and earns you more money but at the expense of your loyal watch enthusiasts. Will be watching with interest over the next year to see what path they go down.

I think that path has already been decided - look at the staff changes, takeover by Watchville, de-Benphasizing etc.... They still have some decent articles, and there's a ton of great stuff in the archives obviously, but it's never going to be the Hodinkee of old that Ben started in his downtime at work... Another sign of how 'mainstream' watches are getting now ...

The one time I tried to post on their site, it was repressed. I understand it's a business - but the rule of law or business is not a standard I wish to measure public good.

My main beef with them, though I can't really blame them for this per se, is directing ignorants to buy our watches and drive their prices through the roof. Watches we spend months or years educating ourself about are handed to them. Hodinkee could point their finger at a Timex and the sheeple would trample each other on the way to the mall.

    :p

Nothing wrong with Timex until Hokinee calls them the next "undervalued watch".
