Apologies the watch I was looking at was serial 18835696, seems a different watch completely, that’s good then.

I wouldn't gift a C case on my worst enemy. Suuuper niche.
My point is that most people would consider that something weird from a time best forgotten.

So what weird stuff or planet are you on....A lot of people here have a C-case or two.

It’s the same watch in my opinion.
The eBay listing says the movement serial no. is 18835698 which being only one digit different is too much of a coincidence. Looking a photos of movement serial numbers can sometimes be deceiving.

Are you sure it’s that exact one? The link and pictures of serial and description would be useful for the record.

It's certainly the same movement and case back. Compare the orientation of the screw heads in the movement and the stamp marks inside the case back.

The difference in the pictures is disconcerting.

No way, I know Somerset well, Yeovil was my birth, schooling & growing up county! Now living in Dorset (which was sunny until today!).
The past few hours (waking up thinking of watches now!) I have narrowed it down to an automatic seamaster with only the baton number markers & a date or day/date (handy at a certain age!), or what I do think he’d also like, the 60’s Cosmic automatic. So I am truly on a mission now but willing to wait. As for going out, indeed who knows!

I'm not far from Yeovil as am in South Petherton😀. We've only been here a few years but, it is a brilliant place to live and we're very happy with the move. We've lived in Bournemouth but that was some time ago. It would be lovely to know somewhere where you could go and see the watch as it's so hard to buy online without a lot of experience. I can't recommend anywhere in particular, sorry.

Keep at it and good luck. Weather is terrible today!

Cheers, Chris

@VickyG - if it’s not already apparent, you have stumbled into the den of some of the best watch detectives on the planet.

That’s a £500 watch all day....£1250 is way overpriced...
Indeed for a collector or a dealer to buy bubut with a warranty

Yes I hadn’t realised that the interior of the watch back matches exactly......what is going on with this watch? I’m very, very relieved I did not proceed with my original sale as really unsure what of would of got ....the comment ‘see a buyer coming’ springs to mind & I’m normally far more astute than that

@JwRosenthal....Sleuths indeed! (I was once a bank fraud investigator so it’s in my genes!)

@ChrisN.....that’s a shame you can’t recommend anyone within the area, thank you though.

Interesting to see how the eBay pictures are more honest of the watch condition than the Etsy listing.

I assume the safety net for the buyer is a little more comprehensive on eBay?

@VickyG May I ask when in April you need the watch? If you still have a couple weeks I’d pass on that Cosmic for now. Also, at that price, I doubt it’ll sell soon. Without the limitation of the exact production year and with a few models that are suitable, you/we‘ll certainly find a better deal within a few weeks.

At least in banking there is regulation and enforceable law, in watch collecting it’s the Wild West! In many cases we are talking about fraud, deceptive business practices, conspiracy, racketeering....most non punishable offenses in this hobby- it’s buyer beware....and that’s where we come in.

Funny I was going to comment on how fast you picked up on that serial number thing.
I think we can now fairly guess the seller canceled the transaction because he could predict the watch was bounf to be returned.
I would have to suspect the difference between the Ebay listing and the other one is that there’s an expert crowd shopping on Ebay, also with very stringent buyer protection. A buyer that’s unhappy with a bad description can pretty much get a refund, no questions asked.
so I would infer sellers have an incentive in posting accurate photos, and despite the Ebay commission the price is adjusted to reflect the flaws in the listing.

I find it very interesting as this seems to bring tangible proof of the merits of the Ebay buyer protection— even though it also leaves room for abuse when an honest seller meets a crooked buyer.

PS just realizing others posted similar comments on Ebay protection.

The original watch posted by the OP is now on eBay for £1250. Clearer photos show it’s not as nice as originally thought. The dial is spotted and the hands have some corrosion. For the premium being asked it needs to be better.
Excellent spot!
For my own edification - I hope not thread-irrelevant - could I ask OFers who know about photography - would the image, er, processing that presented such a clean dial in the OP photos have been responsible for also making the case look polished? I only ask because the Ebay versions of the pictures would not have triggered my rant about polishing. But, once an image gets a little bit improved, who knows where that leads - we have all been warned.

@VickyG great to see all the expert support you're getting - especially as you seem to live near one of our actual watchmakers. If, as it appears, you're moving a little away from the "1961" concept, towards a general made-in-60s theme, then the field opens up lot, with a great variety of styles. You're on track - good luck!

It would have been an unpleasant surprise to receive the watch with the spotted dial after buying it based on the processed etsy photos. 😒

An Ebay search for a "1961 Omega".

Of course that doesn't necessarily mean that they are all genuine Omega, are all actually from 1961, or that they are all original, are all not redials, or that they are reasonably priced. Still, it gives an idea what "1961" looks like.

It's nice to have a watch seeker access the Forum and gratifying to see Forum effort made to assist. Has to be one of the highest and best purposes for the Forum.

@MtV not needed until the third week of April. With things being as they’ve been & a son about to disappear on a Royal Navy tour himself I really would like to get his gift for his special day rather than after but without making the wrong decision

Can I just say I am utterly, utterly overwhelmed in gratefulness by this forum, yes you are all definitely ‘watch geeks’, but said in the most nicest & thankful ways so please no one take offence

My son wishes me to report this seller to Etsy for using them as a platform for sales, only offering me a £100 discount after online payment had gone through them, me accepting this discount only by way of him refunding my debit card & then invoicing me to pay by direct bank transfer. This is when my gut feeling kicked in & wanting some secondary advice as to the actual watch itself.

This is despicable if the watch listed on EBay this morning is the same watch as on the original Etsy listing that I would have received had I gone ahead. Maybe I just struck very unlucky with a dealer who is normally a very good one or maybe (as someone else has said to me) I dented his pride by questioning his integrity & he didn’t like it. Speaks volumes though
