Is this right decision for husbands 60th, 1961 Seamaster?

Well, if Vicky was ready to buy her first one for 1400 GBP why not offer that much for the chronometer —and tell the seller he can keep the bracelet?
No harm trying?

First of all: Great thread and you'll get there eventually @VickyG 😀

My apologies if I overread anything that rules these out, but are C-shape Constellations an option? Available in SS, not too big with 34mm (even though my wristshot might suggest otherwise), great movements, and certainly within the mentioned price range. An example, if I may:

I understand a metal bracelet is no option, but this can easily be replaced for something more to his liking.

I wouldn't gift a C case on my worst enemy. Suuuper niche.

And nobody asks you to.

😁

/edit: Also, it can't hurt to suggest it. They do have many fans around here, so why not in the outside world? 😀

My point is that most people would consider that something weird from a time best forgotten.

That perception is completely new to me. But I might well be weird for liking those, who knows.

The c-case connies are the bomb for those of us who were born in the early 60’s.

Like the OPs husband - exactly. But anyway, let’s wait what she says.

No, it isn't an easy journey but you're getting through it👍 In the end, I'm sure you'll get just what you want. Not everyone wants big watches and that's fair enough - mine are pribably from 32mm to 42 mm and I enjoy them all.

I'm in Somerset. Which county are you in as it may be that someone knows of a local shop that is trustworthy. I think we're allowed out again soon... not sure, though!

Best wishes, Chris

No way, I know Somerset well, Yeovil was my birth, schooling & growing up county! Now living in Dorset (which was sunny until today!).
The past few hours (waking up thinking of watches now!) I have narrowed it down to an automatic seamaster with only the baton number markers & a date or day/date (handy at a certain age!), or what I do think he’d also like, the 60’s Cosmic automatic. So I am truly on a mission now but willing to wait. As for going out, indeed who knows!

My point is that most people would consider that something weird from a time best forgotten.

That’s how people bought Blancpain Fifty Fathoms or other historic watches for very cheap back when the pack considered it “something weird from a time best forgotten”.

True taste does not take directives from the herd.

I find that C case Constellation a beautiful piece of design. If it’s unpopular that’s even better, it will be cheaper.

Well everyone, I came here for advice & help, and got it and I am extremely grateful to you all, thank you. But after asking for a photo of the dial & back of the watch & enquiring about the warranty & service I have received the reply below.
Sadly this has now really put me off, I could cry as I’ve made so much effort trying to do this, researched as best as could, asked for advice from others, but clearly you need to be an experienced collector with connections to even make this idea possible
Sorry no more photos. There seems to get lots going on in the background with other people getting involved after we agreed price so lets cancel the offering”.

Well having been one who posted in defence of FWC, not just here but in other threads, this has totally turned me around.

But my memory is bad so if I ever do do again I hope people will remind me of this.

As others have said, his refusal to send further pictures and the way he responded suggests he had something to hide.

I think you probably dodged a bullet there.

I might know where to get this one at a good price... 😁
Thank you but silver is the metal colour of choice, I know I’m coming over as a fussy-newbie but gold was never my husbands thing. I really am enjoying the thread, learning so much from some great forum posters.....and obviously loving seeing the watches

Thank you and actually for the uninitiated like me I love the c-shape constellation shape but not sure about the ridges all around the case (but see they also were made with a smooth case) - that’s a serious contender of a watch shape that I know my husband would love. Thank you, vicky

Are you referring to this, the bezel, the fluted circle that sits around the dial?

If so, you can get these without this. It’s an 18k white gold bezel, the (even more affordable) steel ones are plain and possibly more to your liking:

(not my picture - I might have helped with the fluted one, but these do come up every once in a while)

Yes just updated my post as I saw they were made with a smooth bezel (sorry now I know the correct term). I most certainly don’t want to offend experienced collectors when I referred to the fluted bezel, kind regards, vicky

The original watch posted by the OP is now on eBay for £1250. Clearer photos show it’s not as nice as originally thought. The dial is spotted and the hands have some corrosion. For the premium being asked it needs to be better.

Are you sure it’s that exact one? The link and pictures of serial and description would be useful for the record.

Well that’s interesting, this is the serial number 18835698 of the watch I was buying & the original link

good lord what is going on in the marketplace for honest buyers like myself
