I just picked up my first omega from a friend last night, ive got $800 in it. I was wondering if you could tell me if it is fake or not? The number on the back is 54740870

It does have a weak battery as its skipping the second hand every 5 seconds. I assume fakes do not have that feature.

One thing I did notice that the date reset was different between mine and another posted on YouTube. At the 2:50ish mark as he sets the date only the date wheel moves. Mine will not do that, I have to put it in the hour skip mode and run it manually.

If everything looks good I'll send it back for a refresh.

Yes, it looks fine - the date function on the quartz models functions differently than on the mechanical version, which is what is shown in that video.

Perfectly genuine.

Looks like the mid size version (36mm).

Not the cheapest well worn mid size quartz out there, but the middies have gained in value (from a very low level) a fair bit in the past year. That is an early tritium dial model, at a guess from circa 1996, give or take a year, based on the dial and serial.

Had the battery swapped and band taken in. Don't trust it to be water proof anymore. On my way out I asked the old codger how the seals were.

"Its rated the same as it was from the factory"

Great, I'll be using it for diving.

"Bring it back before you use it next for diving"

LoL

So does my model have HE in it or is it just a pressure release valve?

Yes, about 0.0005% of the gas inside your watch is Helium.

So the real answer is this...

The Omega Forums answer is here...

Nice watch and welcome to the forum. Unless you plan to have the rear seal and crowns replaced as part of a full service, followed by a pressure test- I would avoid getting it wet. Gaskets are an every 5-10 year service part and beyond that you are on borrowed time.

Whats the average cost to have it serviced? May enjoy a new bezel insert as well.

Service prices are on Omega's web site. You won't get just a new insert - the entire bezel would have to be replaced, which is not cheap. Any new aluminum inserts you see for sale are typically fakes.

Re the second hand skipping by five seconds - I have found that with one of my quartz watches (it's an Ebel). This seems to be a design in the manufacture of the watch to let you know when the battery needs changing.

^^ My wife has one quartz watch- a Marathon Navigator (the only quartz in the house) and it does this when the battery is dying.

This is the EOL indicator - End Of Life indicator. It is triggered when the battery drops below a specific voltage. On the Cal. 1538 that this would have it's 1.3 volts.

Strongly recommend that anyone who sees this on a watch, get the watch in for a new battery soon.

thanks for the links, the older you get the more you realise how little you know, someone, somewhere said once, bit embarrassing how so many bought into the version posted on the forum with helium having to be inserted into a watch and periodically weighing it, Dunning Kruger effect
