Is this a decent 166.010?

Let me know what you guys think of this 166010. Service history is unknown but seller states its running at about +25 secs a day. The crown doesnt look like its original too me. Anything else stick out as a warning? Do you think its seen a polisher? Looking at the small scratches i think it may be fairly honest. To me anyway thats not a huge deal as i would likely have it serviced and polished

Price is $650

Thoughts?

What about the crown seems off to you? If I remember correctly, this reference does come with a scalloped crown, and this particular one does have the old logo.

Not sure just doesnt look the same as other 166's iv seen. Example below which may indeed have the incorrect crown

Looking closely at the watch it seems very honest to my eyes. My main concern was the dial. I really want to avoid major patina or blemishes. This one looks pretty good

The dial on the OP watch is far from blemish free. The dark spot above 5 would keep me from buying it. I would ask for better pics in daylight.

edit- for $650, I could live with the spot on the dial..and if it really bothered me, I could sell it and not lose anything.
And extra links can be had easily for these bracelets

They both look real good to me. The dials are aged normally for the vintage I would think.

Thanks All, How about the case? You think it has been polished? Movement looks ok? Plenty of marks on the back of the case which makes me scratch me head a little

The sides of the case are brushed (and vertically which I haven’t seen on an Omega before) and I don’t recall this reference having any brushed surfaces. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong

I've seen a couple like this, and with the scalloped crown too.

The attached pictures are from the exact sales listing here on OF that made me want the 166 years ago, Appears the brushed vertical case is something that is correct at least based on these pictures

You think it has been polished?

While I'm not a proponent of polishing aside from possibly with a blitz polishing cloth, often it's hard to find vintage stuff that wasn't polished at some point in it's life. For me, I try to take in the watch as a whole, and if the sum of that whole is relatively pleasing I go for it. If I see a watch that looks like it has evenly aged and shows the signs of being used as it should have, it's good enough for me. Searching for safe queens is for the anal and can't possibly be all that much fun.

I agree with this 100%. Everyone has a different threshold for what we can tolerate in terms of wear and tear. I don’t mind some case scratching or light polishing, as Fred said, any watch that had been to a watchmaker prior to 15 years ago got hit with a polish. My threshold is dial- if there is anything amiss on the dial it will bother me. It may be perfectly fine for others, but it would drive me nuts.

It looks like a solid deal for the money and if you find you don’t care for it or find another more to your liking, I don’t think you’ll lose money on it

Crown looks like the one on my 166.010. Chronometers generally go for more as do these with bracelets. So, it looks like a good deal.

Full bracelet length would be 22 elements, there seem to be at least 20 left so still a good lenght.(EDIT: Maybe only 19 ???, hard to tell)

And extra links can be had easily for these bracelets
I'm not sure about the "easily" but they pop up from time to time

Seller has -I think- quite good reputation (its closer... from ebay)

You are in the US? If yes I think you would have to add VAT on the buying price (at least if you were in Europe, don't know the situation in the US)

EDIT: Reviewing it I think there are only 19 elements left so all the three removable links are not present.
Depending on your wrist size it's not unlikely that you might have to source additional elenments to reach the necessary length

I know how it is to have the urge to really buy a watch but this alone should be no argument 😉

That was one of mine and was in good condition. Yes, I would say the brushed finish is correct and I looked at other examples before selling that one to be sure.

The dirt on the dial of the first one would put me off.

Not sure about the second one as the dial fonts look a bit different to what I'd expect so, just check.

👍

Cheers, Chris
