How 'bout the two of you go out back and settle this mess like we did in the "good old days" 😉
Back in the day, we did this as gentlemen did: Never any weapons. The looser buys the drinks ::psy::

Amazing how often this comes up!

New game! How many threads Can you LEGITIMATELY raise this story in?

I have been a member only since the summer and have never heard of it since that time.... possible to link to an original thread? I gotta read that

He is referring to threads that refer in one manner or another to Dennis' infamous purchase of a quartz JLC Reverso by accident. Generally this is done with a humorous, sarcastic, barb meant to provoke Dennis. Merely placing the Word battery and Dennis in the same sentence is usually sufficient. Of course this is done with great affection 😁
It all started here, the rest is legend.

To this day Dennis hates batteries, even his cardiac pacemaker is wind-up.

For those following the Dennis/Reverso/battery saga it must seem I have death wish. Well not really, after years of handling poisonous snakes, taming lions and wrestling Kodiak bears, I have an aptitude for surviving danger.
However, I must caution others, do not try this at home! Dennis has friends in very low places. 😒

NOT ONCE have i seen a handset set counter-clock wise when rotating the crown bottom to top (or, 6 to 12 if you will)...not once...i have since checked every watch i currently possess at home (around 20), not one sets that way...before i texted Matt, i asked 4 other collectors and friends, one being an industry person, who handles tons of watches on a daily basis, and they all confirmed that they too had never seen this.

On one hand, there are a number of long-time collectors on this forum who in this thread have mentioned that they never even noticed that different watches wind differently. So, it is plausible and understandable that, if suddenly this fact hit you upside the head upon handling the Bulova, you were taken to a similar realization as those other long-time collectors who only had this realization via this thread. The initial mistake/realization is understandable.

On the other hand, those long-time collectors on this thread seemed to reach a materially different conclusion from this realization ("huh...that's interesting"), as compared to the various pieces of the shared conversation such as "And if you are going to pray ignorance about the watch winding the wrong way is totally absurd. Either you have a watchmaker who butchers every one of your watches, you are lying, or you just maybe have one or two watches and don't know better. And I know it ain't that last one. Take care man."

I know there are two (three?) sides to each story, though it does seem that you, rather than the OP, jumped to the 'villain' conclusion first, based on just asking a few "collectors" rather than a single watchmaker. Meanwhile, the OP turned to this form to determine whether he himself was in fact a villain, and us popcorn-eaters on this thread then did push the OP to conclude that instead you were the villain. So, with varying degrees of justification, you both arrived at the conclusion that the other person was being the villain.

Seems like the moral to this story for all of us is this: if you have a question about the function of a watch (as opposed to its aesthetic components), first ask the appropriate watchmaker (which is almost what the OP did) - not a bunch of watch aesthetic enthusiasts.

Especially given that...

Many of the watches I've seen you sell and show on instagram (e.g. JLC memovox Caliber 815, UG polerouter cal 69) are set in counter-clockwise motion, so I really can't understand why you wouldn't have noticed that.

"..however, i have handled, owned, bought, and sold TONS of watches, from modern to vintage, from brands ranging from rolex and patek down to the bottom of the barrel."

Code for I know shit loads about watches

"NOT ONCE have i seen a handset set counter-clock wise when rotating the crown"

Code for I was really big nothing and I don't really know much about watches

Well you have come to the best place to learn about all your short-comings in horological mechanics 😗

I surveyed the watches here at my desk.

Counter clockwise: 6
Clockwise: 3

Notable counters: ETA 2824, JLC 889/2, Reverso 854, Gyromatic
Clockwisers: 321 (OK, I didn't test since I'm wearing it, but going with the OP's report, not memory), 3135

Did the same, and my Speedmaster sets differently from my other Omegas (564, 501, 503, 2500C) and a Tissot...
But then again, it was once sent in for regulation at the dealer, so it might have had a new cog installed 😒

Oh, and good job @abrod520 for getting the original Reverso-thread out in the light, it was one of the first things I asked for after joining the forum, after seeing it references a hundred times or so! Naturally, I was refused... 🙁

Just send him a email and say it's all good I'm left handed.....should stump him for a bit....

and please, please, please add that your watchmaker lives on the southern hemisphere - the collector probably was not aware of this vital piece of information!

😁

I take it you're referring to the Philadelphia Flyers position last season in their division? Because he definitely does know some guys that own their own hockey sticks but don't seem to use them to score goals much.

The dial issue was weirdly brushed aside by the OP, even though I suspected to be at his disadvantage and asked for the pictures. Turns out it's quite an interesting issue that is still to be resolved. It could very well tell the truth and solve the 3rd issue below.

The second issue, of the hand turning direction, is not much of an issue to figure out.

The last issue in this thread is mostly a he said she said thingy. One can guess who tells the truth, or just ask Adam for the whole original conversation if you really have to judge. It's still commendable of him to tell the 2nd side of the story and provide a mistake admission (regardless whether or not a true mistake).

The buyer has been asked to post the high resolution photo he offered to as well, but nothing yet...

Given that the dial issue was resolved early on between the parties, its understandable they'd be reluctant to reignite the whole discussion by inviting a bunch of pedants on the internet to pick the whole thing apart all over again...and again. I didn't see a post where either of them asked for an answer to the dial question, or invite detailed opinions on it.

Exactly. But I'd bet it is where all the problems and the truth actually began.

Perhaps, but neither Perry Mason nor Columbo are members here 😉

It actually seems many of them are honourable members here, based on the posts on this issue. 😁
