Is Instagram on steroids?

It’s actually pretty amazing how rapidly it’s shifting, the teens in my family don’t use Instagram at all and are totally moved in to Tiktok with IG being perceived as a platform for Gen X sort of in the same way that Facebook became the boomer platform over the last 5 years or so

Yes, I noticed spike also in mid sept. Thought I finally made the big time, but now you say maybe bots. My self-ego now shattered 😀
Honestly, could care less about 'likes". To me IG was a great way to meet the vintage watch community, however, with facebook getting uglier by the minute, I am trying to dial down (pun there) my Ig posting. Will try to find my "likes" elsewhere in life 😀. P.S., please like this post!

but the majority still get through.
Same with DM's. Somebody seems to be using the same 'mailing list' or whatever you want to call it week after week and IG seems not to care one second

Everything with Instagram and Facebook is a perverse, cynical mess, but your account should be more widely appreciated. As everyone here should know by now, you're a unique presence in the watch enthusiast world, and your IG posts are an extension of that.

I posted a new watch on IG today and I have never received so few likes. Even compared to when I was pretty new to Instagram.

It could possibly be because the watch isn't exactly the flavour of the month 😁

@krogerfoot Now I’m blushing. 😬
Just for the record, this discussion wasn’t intended to be about fishing for compliments.

@ConElPueblo, at least you’ve posted one of the historically best threads on OF- that counts for something and takes much more talent than posting watch pics on IG. 😁

This is something interesting I've noticed too. Back when I was convinced to join IG, my watches were mostly vintage and I guess the people I've interacted with there followed me because of similar interests. But since the theft of my collection, I've not been interested in replacing them with other examples of the same models - plus, it seems in the last 2 years the modern watch industry is starting to appeal to my tastes a whole lot more. So now, I post a decent amount of modern watches and they don't get much likes - but vintage ones still do. So at least that's sorta logical?

In any case, I just don't really care what Facebook Inc does to try to convince me to pay money to 'sponsor' posts, so if they want to restrict viewership of my posts I'm glad to chill out with my core group of followers - many of whom I either know from here, or other online or in person events, and whose interaction I value much more than randos anyway 😀

Since this thread is missing pictures, I’m thinking of posting the below on Instagram as a test. It’s neither modern nor vintage, it’s a hand wind, chromed case thing “made in the British colony of Hong Kong”.
It is guaranteed to appeal to no self respecting watch enthusiast, but I liked the bakelite bezel and colorful whimsical theme.

The little plane is supposed to fly around but the watch never worked. One of those ebay purchases I got refunded immediately. I might have to bring it to my watchmaker in case he can fix it cheaply.

Any update how your experiment is going?

Well the little plane watch was moderately liked, but my Instagram account went bananas for a week… some posts still liked one week later, tons of unknown users viewing the posts and the account, and a deluge of likes for some watches… now it seems to go back to a bit more normal.
It’ll be interesting to see if some of the abnormal activity levels subside or stick with various types of posts.

Same here. The "Like" level has gradually returned to the usual level from Aug, for the posts made in the past 4-5 days. I'm still getting these "delayed likes" (for want of a better word) for posts 1-3 weeks ago though. Most peculiar!

When I did my first reel, my colleague told me they boost you at times to see if your account will “catch on” also to push you to post more reels.
but then they stop the boosting, unless you stop posting reels for a while, in which case they will boost you again if and when you try again.
So in essence, it’s all a system of incentives (aka mental manipulation) to push people to create content and to keep everyone busy on the platform.
