·I feel like we’ve had a few discussions regarding black dial Constellations recently - @qazwsx1 presented a beautiful 2652 with arrowhead indices and then there’s this warning regarding the pursuit of such pieces, of course:

While technically not a pie pan, I’m a very happy new owner of a black waffle dome dial one and felt like sharing some pictures and thoughts regarding my example. I did ask for a third opinion - thanks to @seekingseaquest - and got this example from a fellow OF member I’ve traded multiple watches with already.
This might actually be another “lesson”: I’d say more often than not, current owners of them already have dibs from fellow collectors and a watch might change ownership without ever being publicly available. While this is certainly not surprising, it might be a nice incentive to get involved. Participate in the forum, learn, possibly own more accessible examples, help others where you can. Connections will grow and at some point, one of them may cross your path.
Anyway. To the watch:
It’s another 2652, albeit in a slightly different configuration. Instead of arrowheads, this has a 12-3-6-9 numerals layout and a style of indices that I was wondering what their “slang” term might be?
The party-piece is the dial, of course - very well preserved and I believe it to be correct. The contrast of the black and the gold is mesmerizing and especially on the gold BoR this really feels like a piece for a special occasion.
It does have some issues, however. Most notably:
-missing lume in the hands
-the case has seen polishing and is a bit soft
-at the same time, it’s lived a life after the polish, as some scratches, especially on the bezel, do show
-the crown is a newer replacement. Note the different gold tone
Nevertheless, I didn’t hesitate. Lume can be replaced in a vintage style. The newer crown is a little disappointment and an old one is basically unobtanium, but I can live with that. The movement - happy to follow up with some pictures - is clean, has just been serviced and works smoothly, so no issues there. And then there’s the case: Yes, it’s soft. But since gold-capped examples are always slightly softer than steel ones I don’t mind that too much and most of all, should I stumble upon a nice 2652 with a better case, dial and movement can easily be transplanted, even though this might be blasphemy to some. There’s also the matter of actually wearing it. I’ve found myself hesitating to wear near-mint cases, while this one I’ll happily strap on, even knowing I’ll have one too many in the course of the evening. 😁 The one thing that can not be replaced really is the dial, that’s what I look at the most. This one is in great shape, so I didn’t see any reason not to pull the trigger. It only arrived today and so far, I can’t stop looking at my wrist with a big grin in my face - which, to me, this is about, really. 😀
