In addition to the awful caseback scar, the 32 tooth crown suggests replacement to me too. Opinions vary but most straight 145.012s seem to have the 24 tooth flat foot. It鈥檚 not a huge surprise it was serviced at some point and he may be being truthful when he says he doesn鈥檛 remember it being done.

It might have been serviced after the show and before the sale

Possibly but how pissed off would you be if the servicer did that back damage on a piece you believe to be worth mega money. I suspect it was serviced way back.

Then there is all the people buried with their watch. 馃槜 Quite common in the old days. Think my father was buried with one...
Where abouts? (respect.)

Am I the only one who feels slightly sad about this? Of course absolutely not my business but I鈥檓 not sure I would be able to sell a watch that had such sentimental value.

It鈥檚 just a watch, sadly you can鈥檛 take them with you. Sell it and live.

Let鈥檚 hope he negotiated on the sellers fees else his expected 拢40k turned into a sub 拢20k take home. He may actually feel disappointed bearing in mind the frothy estimate he was given.

Yep. I don鈥檛 understand auctions though. An ultraman sold at Philips this last December for I think $75000 with nowhere near the back story this one had. But I suppose the profile of the auction house must make a difference.

I know the Gardiner Houlgate guys, they operate in Bath and the SW I think. They are not necessarily where I would place a high value watch like that to be honest. They do hold jewellery and watch auctions now and then but are are specialists in rare guitars and the like. I wonder if this should have been placed with Fellows or one of the higher profile London houses. That said there was exposure on here and elsewhere.
