The present Speedmaster reference ST 145.0022 is one of a very limited series of watches made in 2001. As demonstrated by the extract from the Omega archives, it is a prototype powered by the manual caliber 861 and especially created to commemorate the attack on the Twin Towers happened on the 11th of September 2001. Its red, shiny dial it’s simply incredible and captures the eyes of a watch lover for its intensity. Some signs of age and use do not affect the beauty and specialty of this extraordinary dial. On the case back a tribute to patriotism and fortitude with the enamel American flag flapping in the wind and the words “New York is still here”. A highly sought after model, the present watch is even more collectible for its being a prototype.

That is an incredible and intense looking red. Sadly the dial and rehaut shows, what to me, looks like rust/moisture damage. Additionally quite a lot of chipping around the subdials.

Interesting piece though. I do wish they would have posted more photos of it. I can only access that single photo.

I am not easily triggered, but the wording of that description is very poorly done. I also find a commemorative watch linked to the September 11th attacks to be in exceptionally poor taste. Combine that with the ugly red dial and its three strikes for me. Definitely not a case of rarity translating into desirability.

Good point. Damn , I didn't realize how poorly that description is worded ::facepalm1:: until you mentioned it.

Most likely due to the fact that the dial spent a looooooooong time not inside a watch, as evident by ...

one of a very limited series of watches made in 2001.

-> There were no more 't swiss made t' dials made in 2001 (apologies for stating the obvious).

Accompanied With the Extract of Archives

Someone please request this so we can see.

Such an obvious tell, yet one that is so often ignored

Pretty smart if this didn't come farther than Prototype, for so many reasons, mainly ethical. And honestly, would anyone wear this and say "Hey, this commemorates 9/11, nice isn't it!"

I love the way dealers say the exact opposite of the truth: OF COURSE the signs of age detract from the beauty of the dial.

And as said above, it's astonishing and depressing that someone in Omega's marketing department had the bright idea of commemorating a tragedy.

Except they didn’t.

that extract does not say what it claims.

dial is much earlier... and I doubt the caseback under examination is anything other then a fraud.

Has anyone recieved pictures yet of the case back and Extract?

My first thoughts were a custom case back, I can hardly believe Omega would be so insensitive.

yep had seen the caseback in the catalogue. Sorry for not adding that to the original post. That caseback and extract raises further questions. Who has already contacted MLG for a copy of the Extract of the records? Could be that this was serious considered at that time but eventually canceled for the above mentioned reasons. I think regarding the color that it might have been a fundraiser concept for the firefighters.

Here's the best I can do in Lightroom on the extract. I can read "New York," but that's about it. Did Omega actually do extracts for prototypes?

I find this unbelievable. Would still love to see that extract in readable resolution though.

Edit : also, weren't these format extracts the extracts that 'anything' could be put in the remarks that the owner wanted?

You've seen the extract?
No, but a dial that is pre 99 and shows signs of wear from being outside a watch. A prototype with a number 28 on it?

I call massive BS. Lets see a clear extract.

Utter, utter bull shit.

This has just been cobbled together with a modified case back and a repainted dial by someone.

No way I did it leave the factory in this configuration.

Really interesting remarks here. Owner or shareholder of MLG is Davide Parmegiani. This is the vintage kingpin and most well known dealer of all. It would surprise me if he want to risk his reputation on a fake watch. But on the other hand prototype always keeps the bells ringing

Do you think it’s more likely that Omega used a 5 year old, damaged dial (if somehow it’s original) for a new/prototype watch? No way.

I think the dial is either a very good repaint or possibly someone got hold of some ‘prototype’ genuine, coloured dials and along with a custom case back, made these up.
