Interesting how vintage Speedmaster buying/collecting has changed

Bumping an old thread here but I think that I finally figure out what my "final" Speedmaster collection will look like ::facepalm1::.

I realized it's not all vintage but pre MWO/SP101 5 years ago I bought the Silver Snoopy (looooong wait ...) thanks to all the press around the Omega Event in Houston where I live - https://www.fratellowatches.com/speedy-tuesday-houston-speedmaster-event-report/, thinking that it was the only Speedy that I ever wanted (!), but then I got the Speedy bug and added the FOIS, and afterward the CK2998.

After my discovery of MWO and SP101 thanks to OF I added a Transitional. I picked it because I did not know any watchmaker from Houston that could work on cal 321 (good advice from SP101). That's how my collection looked like in 2017, and I did not have any collection "theme".

The Silver Snoopy got to be so pricey so I no longer wanted to wear it, and I was thinking about switching to vintage for occasional wrist time while keeping my FOIS for regular wear. So I sold the CK2998 and Silver Snoopy and use part of the net gain to buy a cal 321 145.012-67. Still no collection "theme" but that's how 2018 ended for me.

In 2019 I added the Apollo 11 50th LE, being unsure about the Buzz Behind but wanted to commemorate the first moon landing which turned me into a space fan ever since. Still no "theme" but I started thinking "when will this Speedy collecting madness end for me?" - yeah that's no joke 馃榿

Then recently a fine condition Gemini IV was offered on OF by a great seller, and I finally figured out how to optimize my Speedy collection given my resources. I will try to obtain tributes to unforgettable events (for me anyway) related to Omega Speedmaster:

1. First Omega in Space ===> FOIS
2. First Omega in EVA ===> Gemini IV
3. First watch worn on the moon ===> Apollo 11 50th Anniversary
4. First watch awarded with Nasa Snoopy Award ===> waiting till Oct 5th 2020, or go vintage with 105.012-66 CB
5. A Speedy reference that was worn on the moon ===> 145.012-67
6. Transition from Moon Landing to Space Station ===> Transitional

and so I have all cal 321, 861, 1861, 3861 as well.

That's my thinking as of today for my Speedy collection theme given my resources - "Interesting how Speedmaster buying/collecting has changed". Many thanks to OF, MWO, SP101, it has been an enjoyable journey.

Let's see your pre MWO/SP101 purchases!

Those are long gone, most were not anymore in line with my collecting standards that raised during the journey.

Only just read this post but it deserves a bump (and continuation), it's great to hear people's personal experiences of collecting and the developing speedmaster knowledge base back in the day.

I'm also interested because it reminds me of one of my great regrets - I was researching my first omega in 2010-2011 and had it down to two options - a speedmaster or a planet ocean. In those days I had some vague awareness that speedmasters were a special thing, still with very reasonable prices. But I remember a conflict where I wanted an automatic watch (ie reduced), but the manuals were just more balanced, better proportioned, better looking watches. So I went for the PO.

Now that I've recently bought a couple of speedies, I still sometimes dream about what I might have picked up (and for what price) back in those days. But I can console myself with the fact that I ended up with a 2500 42mm PO for around $900 USD, which I still own (see avatar) and has become a bit of a classic in its own right...

As the Speedmaster trend started to go crazy I was reading about all these watches being bought from one owners that had worn them for years and now their sons and grandchildren were selling them to guys like us.

I wanted to be the one owner guy that buys a watch and wears it everyday and makes his own vintage watch.

I bought new in 2013 and wear it everyday.
Don鈥檛 own polywatch

Due for a service now and will get a service so I can swim with it again just like I did when I first got it. ( more of jumping in the pool on a hot and humid day countless times not even thinking what I was wearing but yes swimming with it )

Still follow vintage and could probably purchase being savvy on the ins and outs of models and parts. Own MWO and bought It when it first came out, but have to much fun chasing vintage dress watches.

Have watched the minefield of buying a vintage Speedmaster get more dangerous over the years. The cobbled together watch is now 1 in 3 compared to 1 in 10 and prices have gone nothing but up.
Just the sheer number of newer people to speedmasters that are happy to drop $10k on their first Speedmaster after a few days looking is alarming.

i got burned on my first speedy... so much for research.
it was a 1968 transitional.

i was so excited it had the dropped R... paid $1861 for it.

after the fact i found it discussed on several sites.
oh to get a pre-moon speedy lesson now for sub $2k.

Well, the seller was quite right stating that 'These are the next hottest collectible watch as the Rolex have sky rocketed out of reach of many collectors".
