·I had a moment of reflection today about my watch collecting journey, and figured I'd start this threat to share and hear our evolution in watch preferences.
When I was a poor student, my quartz designer brands and Bulovas really made me feel like I was wearing some fine pieces (a couple Swiss made, which meant nothing to me at the time). As I escalated the arduous latter of success, I eventually entered the luxury watch club with my criteria initially being:
Any watch I bought had to be quartz (I was irrationally afraid of getting an automatic watch for whatever reason).
When it came to tool watches, they had to have a steel bezel.
All my watches had to have a metal bracelet.
Case size was never a consideration.
I would go out of my way to find models with a butterfly clasp.
As time went by, my watches had to have applied logos and markers.
As more time went by, I wasn't satisfied with any watch that wasn't Omega.
Fast forward to today, and I've found that:
I can't stand watching a ticking seconds hand (I still own a few quartz, but mostly Bulova UHFs with a smooth sweep).
Ceramic bezels are really cool (especially with liquidmetal); removing scratches from steel bezels is a PITA.
Rubber and leather straps are very comfortable and can really reinvent a watch (although I still hate pin buckles).
I can't wear anything under 39mm (43mm for tool watches).
Quick adjust fold-over clasps are super cool, as well as deployment clasps.
There are features more important that applied logos.
Diamonds look tacky - especially fake ones.
There are watches that are not Omega that I truly enjoy.
I still haven't acquired a taste for NATO straps.
Funny things to think about, but thought it would be fun to share. What has your evolution in watch tastes been?
