Hi guys and happy new year.
From this morning on Omega website, the price about complete service is increase by 200€ for all type of Watch.

Did u expect that?

750 € for a single time, start to become a madness 😡

It’s been mentioned on here a few times so it’s not unexpected but it is unwelcome. In the UK the cost to service a steel 3 hander is now £590 and a chrono costs £825. Gold etc cased watches are higher still.

Not good news. It will likely mean a lot less watches go for an official service. The case for some lower cost older Omegas like the Speedy Reduced is made even less appealing when you bear in mind you may have to spend 50% of the purchase cost to put right a fault.

STS authorised by Omega to repair are quoting £450 for steel mechanical non Chrono. Omega are £590. I wonder if STS will increase prices?

Mind you STS charge extra for polishing, I would not want this anyway. Maybe this is why STS is cheaper than Omega, as Omega include polishing.

I predict and upswing for independents in 2023!

If you can find one that hasn't retired and is taking new business. 🙁

Switzerland's industry alone has said they need 4,000 watchmakers trained in the next four years to meet increased demand and retirements.

That is ridiculous, especially the last service I had from Southampton this year, which was shocking, and I had to wait 5 months for the privilege. I'm always wary about sending watches back to them, and I'm always right to be. They seldom come back better than they left me. Apart from the polishing.

There are so few watchmakers out there and brands are in trouble. Omega service times are through the roof right now, in Canada at least. Every year more and more independents drop off the map for one reason or another. As well, salaries in the industry are starting to increases. Brands have a reputation for paying pathetic money to watchmakers, so nobody wants to work for them.

To be honest, Omega’s service prices were actually very low for what you got included in that. If you know what we pay for parts as independents with parts accounts, it would make your eyes water!

As far as independents being cheaper, I wouldn’t count on it. If you want the job done properly parts need changing, equipment needs to be bought, consumables, etc. These guys doing slap up service jobs for $200 either aren’t around already, or won’t be very soon.

Maintaining mechanical watches is a costly business

STS actually do include a light refinish as they call it in their service charge. In my experience this is very good and unless there are noticeable dings our gouges you'll get back a watch that looks nearly new. They do charge extra if laser welding or more intensive refinishing is required but AFAIK Omega themselves wont laser weld at all, they will recommend a new case or whatever.

Now is a good time to be a Hobby watchmaker. Apart from a certain Speedmaster chrono I do not fee comfortable servicing - mostly as I do not have the special tools and fixtures. Rusted chrono's on the other hand ...
Bring on the Bettlach, AS, and ETA scrap movements.
Eventually I will get back to the Landerons and the Ladies Omegas ...
(do I really have 100 watches to play with? -- Then why do I plan to get more?)

Laser welding extra, they charge to polish £140.

My nearest OB warned me about the change, but also quoted at least 6-8 months turnaround time.

I hate that they ask a flat fee for all watches. I would expect that an old ETA based movement costs less to service than those modern co-axials.

750eur is almost 50% of what those ETA watches retailed for...

What is the history of these price increases over the last ten years?

The value of the watch has little to do with the cost of servicing - labour is labour, if you are working on something that is valued at $1,000 or $10,000, it still costs the same.

The flat fee is a good thing for customers generally, in particular if you are a "if it's not broke don't fix it" kind of person. It saves time having to quote and get a response a lot of the time, and some of the parts that are included (even on those ETA based watches) cost hundreds of dollars, so if they need replacing, you are way further ahead.

Sure, I'm not saying the service price should reflect the cost of the watch. But in the past I could have my watch serviced for 250eur. Now even when I bring it in neatly on time without many parts being worn out I pay three times more, just because they've moved on to more complicated movements and people don't take in their watch for servicing unless its broken.
