Baseball gloves have their own ritual. Back in the day teammates would debate this topic for hours. My favorite of the crazy ideas was cheap canned shaving cream (contains lanolin), followed by two balls in the pocket, wrapped closed with an old T-shirt, and into the oven on low temp for an hour or so. Wish I could have seen the expressions on their dad's faces when they came down into the kitchen and made that discovery about the $200 they'd just dropped on a new glove.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to treat the rest of the band IMHO. Carefully avoiding the gold leaf of course. In conversation with some serious leather workers, they swear excellent results with extra virgin olive oil, right off the kitchen shelf. I've tried it on razor strops and it works well.

I used to use Nokona baseball gloves. They sell a 'special' leather conditioner that is 99% petroleum jelly--though they'd never admit it. For my vintage bands, that's what I use. Coat on some Vasoline, let it sit for a couple of hours or overnight, then wipe off the excess. It will darken the color of the leather, as will just about all of these treatments, so think carefully before proceeding.
