In the market for a Seamaster De Ville

Hey folks! I’m in the early, early stages of purchasing my first (real) watch and have narrowed it down to a few models, but am leaning towards the Seamaster De Ville.

I’ve noticed list prices range anywhere from ~$1,000 all the way up to ~$4,500, but I’m not exactly sure what to look for. This one on Chrono24 looks perfect, but it’s on the higher end of the price range I mentioned above.

Pretty much looking for whatever help you all are willing to give .

Cheers

I would recommend staying away from Chrono. The price for that watch is absurd. You should be able to get a De Ville for less than $800 if you’re patient. Stick around here. There’s a plethora of knowledge to learn from 👍

Haha, love the honesty. I'll do my best to stay up to to date w/ the marketplace here — how do we feel about eBay?

There is a thread concerning eBay watches members post as somewhat a value, all brands.

Better know what you are doing on eBay, too.

Take your time and don't rush it, though. As said above, you should be able to get one around 800$. Spend sometime reading about them here and in other places so that you know what to look out for. Those deVilles are beautiful watches. Good luck!

This is the equivalent of a Nigerian Prince email scam. Put a ridiculous price on an item and hope that some sucker buys it.

I’d agree with all the advice above and definitely look at the watches listed here and eBay auctions. In terms of price though you will clearly pay a premium for 18k gold relative to stainless steel and I’d have thought that circa $1,600 would be reasonable.

Great point! I wasn't clear in my original post → I'm definitely looking for a gold model, and 18k is preferred.

I'm seeing more than a few eBay listings from Uruguay...

Anything to look out for there?

Just the usual. I see a lot of watches with repainted dials from South America. Also, making a return internationally is always potentially tricky, so try to buy from sellers with a lot of feedback and legit current listings.

I was given some advice that it would be much more helpful to show pictures of what I'm trying to find 😀

Omega Seamaster De Ville
* Gold (18K preferred)
* Date indicator preferred
* Lighter dial (white/silver), but open to gold
* Also prefer the dial with thinner hour markers (no numbers)

Some examples:

Are you looking for yellow or white gold? If yellow, you can afford to take your time and be picky as they’re relatively common. White gold on the other only pop up occasionally and you’ll be looking at closer to $3k.

Received an offer from this seller that’s still higher than I think I should pay, but wondering how this looks to you folks that know better 😀

That’s insanely overpriced.

One of our members, @keenraven just picked this up for $1070, its 14k gold not 18K but honestly nobody can tell the difference and 14K isn’t as soft.

Really nice pickup and a very good price on a solid gold DeVille. 14K gives you plenty more options due to how common it was in the US.

Thanks to the amazing @paddymoran I am officially the owner of an absolutely LOVELY Seamaster De Ville! Paddy was so, so helpful and patient — and I can't stop staring at the thing!

Do I know how to set the date? Nope. Do I know where to take it in to get serviced? Maybe! Either way, excited to be an Omega owner!
