Al, do you have any pets? We had a cat that lived for 20 years. We had to have her put down 6 months ago. I'd love to get another cat, but Mrs. Blufinz is against it.
Yes! My wife and I have had pets for the whole time we have been married, with the exception of maybe a few months between our first and second dogs, when we were not sure if we wanted another after our first dog died. He was a Lhasa Apso that we rescued when he was 1, and we had him for another 15 years, so that one was very rough. We put him down on a Saturday, and I lost my job the following Monday, so it was a bit of a stressful time where we were making some decisions...like if I would go back into engineering again, or pursue becoming a full time watchmaker (I already was doing it as a side business).
Our pet journey started when we were dating and I was already out of school and working, and she was still working on her biology degree. She was doing some studies on mouse kidneys or something, so she had to kill a bunch of mice, take out their kidneys, and slice them using one of those machines for cutting thin sections, stain them, etc.. There was one smaller mouse that she didn't want to kill, and eventually her work was done and this one was left over. Her professor said "Okay either get rid of it or take it home with you!" so that was our first pet.
From there we have had a couple of rabbits, some gerbils one of her her bosses basically coerced her into taking (it didn't take much), some freshwater fish, a pet rat, a Goffin's Cockatoo, and several dogs. We currently have two Whippets...
The smaller one on the left is Maeve, and the larger one is the older one we have, Remi...
Remi is getting up there (he's 9), and has some health issues, so we are not sure how much longer he'll be with us. Maeve is much younger and she is still full of life, and is really a hoot to have around...
We had another Whippet previously, Raven, and she died of cancer. The Whippets are all former show dogs who have earned their championships, and really we just want to have them as pets and give them good homes, not "work" them as show dogs or breed them. We aren't into dog competitions or anything, we just love dogs.
Losing pets is never easy, but I don't see us not having at least one pet of some kind pretty much all the time.
Cheers, Al
