I'm dumbfounded. How in the hell does Seiko pull it off?

the GS has not lost a minute in the 4 months iv owned it
Nice set! Odd the highbeats use different movements I’d expect a cleaner date change then a 7s25 on the grand. I guess it’s the difference between a king and grand.

Depends on the movement. I have had a King Seiko with an instant day/date chance which happened within a minute or two of 12 o clock. That watch had a 5246 movement.

and the shape of my ears shall remain a mystery
Were they awkward ears?

...and by awkward here I mean your chirpy, silver lining definition of awkward: "quirky, unusual, non standard".. if so I suspect Elven or Vulcan ears...gorgeous ears...no need for a hat at all!

Of course if they were "awkward" (Oxford Dictionary definition below) ears, well I would suspect something more on the lines of Troll, Gremlin or even the Wicked Witch of Oz...but even then I would say...throw away your hat man...punk up the overall look and be proud!!

AWKWARD

causing difficulty; hard to do or deal with.

Deliberately unreasonable or uncooperative.

Causing or feeling uneasy embarrassment or inconvenience.

Not smooth or graceful; ungainly.

Uncomfortable or abnormal.

Origin

Late Middle English (in the sense ‘the wrong way round, upside down’): from dialect ‘backwards, perverse, clumsy’ (from Old Norse afugr ‘turned the wrong way’) + -ward.

Sorry...I just could not resist the temptation of being "awkward" (first two definitions above)😉😜😁

Indeed, and I am genuinely thrilled to see you've embraced a more standard definition of the word with such enthusiasm!😀

Back on topic...this is (believe it or not) a Credor quartz based (Spring Drive) minute repeater:

Not to everyone's taste I agree, but still looks like some significant effort went into that watch😀

Would be nice to have commentary from some of the well known watchmakers who specialize in vintage and modern design Seikos. I don't think they post on OF. These people have seen many many more vintage and modern seiko movements. I'm quite sure they're not all soft screws and low quality materials.

I just sold a 6159-7010 grandfather tuna hi-beat that was running well well well within grand seiko standards (more strict than cosc), serviced by Adrian over at Vintage time Australia. Over a week of wear it gained 1 second. I don't think anyone who knows this watch well looks at it and thinks it's cheap or is cheaply made.

Here's a photo to remember her by.

Wow. This thread got crazy, I think I just spent an hour reading through all the back and forth. It was like watching a tennis match!

Anyways, just wanted to put myself out there as firmly Team Seiko, and agree with @sgtpry on the SKX013. I have several Seikos in my collection, and have let a few go, but the SKX013 has been my go-to lately. I'm lovin' that insert fade on yours - I'm thinking I might have to leave mine out in the sun to speed along the process! Please tell me it didn't take too long...

Would be a snob to underappreciate a Seiko

I love my SKX013 myself, faded insert makes it better too, proudly sits on the same rotation line with any Swiss Made pieces 😎

Some Hodinkee/JPM straps are more expensive than the SKX013 😉

i collect quite a few pieces of vintage Seikos and Grand Seikos, and boy are they in excellent condition (mostly) even though they are half a century old. and nowadays Seikos have been active in releasing limited editions with really amazing dials, (though nothing to really shout about their workhorse movements), and it has really been very damaging to the wallet

Okay, that is a nice watch! Funny how they shaped a visible balance like cage.

Lovely watch - the accuracy on yours is, however, incidental. It varies greatly on the Seikos I've had, including new ones. I think their circa 1970 offerings are very close to the Swiss watches they are emulating and there are heaps of cheap thrills to be found there.

About a year ago I started pursuing 60s and early 70s Seiko's and can validate this comment! They are ridiculously accurate, and dont mind sitting for a few weeks between use. My ONLY complaint is that I had an OEM crystal break on one of them very easily. My wife knocked it off the table and it dropped to the seat of a chair (maybe 2 ft?). Landed face down and, of course, cracked. Otherwise, phenomenal watches for every-day wear.

I had a similar event with an older chronograph. Something knocked off the entire outer bezel and took the inner bezel and crystal along with it.

Took me several months to find replacements. Seiko USA was able to give me part numbers but could not find the parts.

Thank you eBay!

Really? I like it the watch ends up wearing smaller due to it. It’s never bothered me and some Swiss brands did it too. In theory it’s so your wrist doesn’t hit the crown on deflection if you have small wrists. I know the skx is one of the most comfortable watches on a bracelet I’ve ever owned.

Agreed, it's one of my favorite features.
