If your watch smells of peppermint… then you should open it ! And I did, and you know what, it smelled like peppermint because the battery contact was fixed with chewing gum, one of the contacts had broken. Obviously, the owner didn't know what else to do. Nice idea, the clock was running. I admit it was disgusting, but with Q-tips and alcohol the gum was completely removed. Of course I ordered a suitable spare part immediately. This is what it looked like inside (gentle minds should look away now ) And so after the cleaning I hope this little story makes you smile a little bit in these hard times. That just made my stomach turn But then again I think of all the nasty, unmentionable things that a regular vintage timepiece goes through and I still wear them.
I can only wonder what that guy would have done with an automatic watch. At least he was kind enough not to superglue the contact.
I thought this was like if you smell burnt toast then it's a sign you're having a stroke. Then again, if I opened up my watch and saw that, I probably would.
Just a Little update: Today i found out why the owner used his chewing gum. The caliber 1345 needs a batterie N° 388, today you can´t buy them anymore, they are forbidden. I have ordered an adapter ring so i could use a batterie numbered 329. The chewing gum was also a replacement for the ring We'll see if it works that way after i put all the pieces together and maybe it will help one of you
Last but not least i finished this little project with a cleaned and running watch that will stay in my Collection. For the archive a picture of the adapter ring and the new Batterie N°329 And a picture under the sun … or two Stay healthy
